EMG SA user -> back to passives ?

.... well, I'm thinking more and more to sell the EMG DG-20 set and get back to passive design.

I need to nail the Gilmour tone as close as possible. Although I already have some setups in mind, what would YOU dudes suggest ?

The guitar is a Dlx MIM strat, maple neck, with a rather bright body.

old gilmore tone or new? i think with either the aps1 or ssl1 would be a good choice for his older tone

Re: EMG SA user -> back to passives ?

i have never tried the emg dg setup and i was curious......why is it that you don't like it?You cannot nail the gilmour tone with them?

Re: EMG SA user -> back to passives ?

Let me guess. They were too clean, and didn't have any life, right? I had a set in my MIM Strat and sold that to some poor guy. They were noiseless (well, until you cranked bothe the Presence and Expander circuits), but they were blah. Nothing is worse than a pickup that just doesn't seem to like to do anything right. The cleans are bland and they are hard to overdrive so even distorted sounds sound crappy.

These were my experiences, and this was why I was turned off of strats for a few years (all because I thought that the DG-20 represented real strat tones).

Me too. Or maybe the new Antiquity II's which are alnico 5 like vintage Strat pickups from the 50's and 60's. I have a set but haven't tried them yet.

But Gilmore's tone is tough to duplicate....with any pickups!

It's his touch and soul and vibrato and musical ideas...not just the gear.

LOL
I think it's more "ridiculous fx chain" than "touch, soul and vibrato" :laugh2: :laugh2:

IMO, Gilmour tone is the easiest one to nail ... seriously.. with the right efx, the right setups, it's so easy :22:

Boy...I disagree. I think Gilmore gets some of the most distinctive soloing tones of anyone. He uses alot of effects, but it's his smooth touch, picking technique, vibrato and musical ideas that make me want to listen. Lew
