Anybody know if guys like zakk wylde, James hetfield or Kirk hammet use the 18 volt mod with there emgs? Asking because I always read about this power clipping problem. Wondering how big of a problem it really is?

Judging by the fact that the EMG Signature pickup outfits come with a single 9v battery clip, it should be reasonable to assume that these artists do not use 18v.

The "problem" with EMG pickups is their restricted dynamic range compared to passive pickups. For some guitarists, reduced (compressed) dynamic range is precisely what they require. Seymour Duncan Blackouts and Live Wire Classic II active pickups offer a wider dynamic range than most EMGs. EMG has responded with the -X series.

Ya pays yer money an' takes yer choice.

i compared the Blackouts to the X series and i prefer the EMG's, the Blackouts simply had too much output, too much volume, and the picking dynamics were reduced significantly...

i did not know about these but i don't want to spend any more money on pick ups at this point, i do however have a EMG-60 and a Blackout AHB1 i would be willing to trade for a Live Wire Classic...i don't see this listed at GC or musiciansfriend, why is that?

Blackouts get more publicity. They certainly sell in greater numbers. Hence, that is what the retailers will stock.

If all you tried was the AHB-1 bridge, you're missing out. The AHB-1 neck in thr bride fricken kills. And the AHB-2 has a cult following for its thick and driving midrange. Samhill over on Harmony Central has some killer youtube postings with his AHB-3 set.
