soo ive been thinkin about getting a washburn x50 pro

i like everything about it but my amp is a line 6 spider, and the guitar has the EMG 81/85 setup

how would these sound compared to if i used duncans or dimarzios or any other good passive pups?

Ive searched, and the signal seems to be mixed. Some say the EMGs would sound horrible, some say they just woldnt reach their potential, and some say its just fine.

whats the deal here??

thanks!

Btw i plan to get a better amp as soon as i can afford one.

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

Well, there is nothing inherently wrong or incompatible about playing with EMGs through a Line 6 amp, if that's what you are alluding to.

Do actives sound better/worse than passive pickups? You'd have to play both and judge yourself -- it's a very personal choice. Some people love the sound of active pickups, others hate them. And some people, like me, don't really worry about such minutiae.

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

With low output passive pickups, you turn up the gain control on the amp if you want play high-gain music. If you then switch to high-output actives, you'll have turn DOWN the gain control; otherwise you can overdrive the preamp to the point of clipping, which would sound nasty on a solid-state amp. Just turn down the gain, that's all.

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

I think it would sound fine. I like passives more myself, but I have a guitar with an 81/85 setup and a guitar with some HM LiveWires - both are pretty aggressive sounding.

It really depends on what you want to play, EMGs may do the trick for you. If you plan on getting a new amp in the next year or two, pick a guitar/pups that will work now and down the road. If you plan on using what you have for a long time, get the guitar/pups that work best to your ears through that amp.

You should be able to get your hands on a guitar with an 81/85 and test drive them.

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

Me and the other guitarist in my band both play on line6 spider head/cab. I've got an ESP with jb/59 and hes got a hellraiser with EMG 81/85. We both sound badass :P

EMGs sound great thru the line6. Very crunchy and aggressive.

THe Jb is more open sounding and cuts thru the mix better. Less aggressive, but not much. Its more versatile and better for lead. The EMG has less treble but that may because the hellraiser has a mahogany neck, as opposed to the ESP's maple. It for works perfectly for us because I play more lead and he plays more rhythm.

Go for it.

That's a fine looking axe. Which color are you going for?

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

hey im thinkin about getting the natural one

btw, heres what someone on another forum told me:

EMGs are high gain pickups, and high gain on a Line 6 Spider sounds like ass already. You'll get loads of feedback and a beyond the gates of hell bad sound. My cousin plays through a Spider II 30 watt and a Schecter C-1 Classic with EMG 81/85. It sounds like utter ass, just SO bad. Ass for classic rock, that EMG combo is meant for HEAVY music. It will once again, IMO, sound like ass.

is he right?

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

That kid is full of it, sounds very biased. Line6 amps usually have a variety of distortion levels, most all sound glorious. I'm not a fan of the insane channel but it has its uses. EMGs are great for heavy music but they can handle other styles of rock.

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

LOL just because an amp is high gain doesnt mean you have to use all the gain. With that said, I think spiders sound terrible.

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

Well the spiders are not the best amps in the world but you'll be able to get some tones. I doubt you'll get great classic rock sounds.

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

lol im glad i know about SD

dudes on other forums dont know what theyre talkin about sometimes

thanks for clearin that up

Re: EMGs...Line 6 spider...yay or nay?

Line 6 stuff does sound good. Which version of the Spider are we talking about here? The only caution I will give you is that with EMG's your soudn might be thin. EMGs in a mahogany set neck will sound awesome. But still may come across thin on a Spider I or II. The IIIs seem to have fixed that thin problem. It was really only on the higher strings it sounded thin to me anyway. Great gutiar btw. Me likey.
