Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more power

This is about trying to get a Greenback tone with higher power. In case you wonder why not just getting the real Celestion Greenback, I really need to keep my rig portable and light, a 4x12 is not an option for me now, damn knees. Hopefully more power plus higher sensitivity can hopefully help me to keep a good sound level on only a 2x12.

So can you tell me how good are these Eminence speakers for a classic rock sound that is usually associated with Greenabacks? For example the Private Jack and the GB128 sounded so close on the demos I heard, and I heard a shootout of Wizard vs PJ and those were so close. I think I will like any of those 3 anyways but I am just trying to know more about these speakers from people using them.

What kind of music I want to play? Classic rock like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, AC/DC and maybe some 80s hard rock/ like GnR.

These might be worth looking into.

I have the Eminence Red Fang 12” (and it’s smaller brother 10”, though they don’t list that on the site any more). They’re great speakers, very sensitive and LOUD! I chose the Red Fang over Celestion Blue (which I’d had in my old AC30) when spec-ing my Whitney Custom amp.

The Wizard has an early break up, a very pronounced midrange, and is loud as all get-out. Not sure how green back like it is, but it’s not a light or small loudspeaker; I have two of them in a Marshall 2x12, it’s not light. They are also quite deep, they almost didn’t fit in the cabinet!

This song was recorded using a Bumbox JMP clone into that cabinet with a Cascade Fat Head II ribbon microphone about 4” from the cabinet dead center on one of the speakers for all of the heavy guitar parts from 1:50 onwards. To my ears this is a very true representation of the sound of the Wizards on a cranked amp, especially the NWOBHM section starting at about 5:00.

I had a GB128 in a blues deluxe but dont know how they are in my Marshall. I like creamback its similar to greenback back with 65 watts

Splawn Small Blocks.
55w greenback clones. Made by eminence. You have to buy them through Splawn though. $95/ea. IIRC

Eminence wizard is a good shout, had one in a Blues deluxe I had for like 5 years, took the thing everywhere, sounded great

Why not just get a higher power GB?

My “go to” speakers other than Celestion are Scumbacks

These are still on sale, and a pair should easily handle gigging volume

I cannot get Scumbag and Avatar speakers here in Mexico. About the Creamback, not sure it sounds that much of a greenback to me on the demos, I had been suggested that one too but I wanted this thread to talk about your experience with Eminence speakers.

Thought of trying V30's? They are designed to be like the vintage greenbacks used to be. They are really loud too. If you are looking for eminence, the wizard is my recommendation.

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

v30s and greenbacks sound nothing alike. the v30 was supposed to sound similar to the alnico blue but with significantly more power handling. im a fan of the blue, the greenback and the v30 (have em all) but they dont sound much alike. not sure about a higher power greenback, i havent heard anything in person that nails that sound. the creamback is supposed to but im not sold on that

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

The Creambacks sound more refined than the current Chinese G12M Greenback offering (which is a nice-sounding speaker as well, just more ratty/raw). The Creambacks resemble the Heritage and EVH Greenbacks more (they have the same cone).

You might want to look into the Lynchback as well.

the private jack is excellent. All the stuff that is nice about a greenback without the bad stuff.
Real sweet almost alnico sounding top end. A firmer low end than a greenback, but maintains that woody tonality.
Plenty of growl and attitude. Even sounds good in open cabs.

+1 the Private Jack is like a better Greenback IMO.

Wizards are great, but they sound more like a G12H30 than a Greenback. I have Wizards in my ported 1x12 & 2x12 cabs after using H30s for years in a vintage Marshall 4x12.

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

I'm waiting on a GB128 right now (out for delivery) 'cause I really need a nice 1x12 to use for band practice. A friend of mine had a couple in his 2x12 & they sounded absolutely nuts ..so... :D

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

Well I just pulled the trigger on a Private Jack, it is in theory 3 db louder than my current speaker and not as heavy as the Wizard so I think on paper looks like a good middle point, louder yet not too heavy. My amp can go up to 60 watts so I think I carry my old speaker as a backup in case I get to blow the Private Jack :)

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

I own all three. To my ears, the GB12 has more bottom end. The Private Jack does a nice job of getting you in Greenback territory while still delivering its own tone - a little less piercing on the highs than a G12M-25 Greenback.

Just my .02.

Re: Eminence GB128, Private Jack or Wizard? Looking for Greenabck tone with more powe

A high power greenback seems like one of the holy grails of the guitar world, along with plexi tone at lower volumes, the 10K PAF, noiseless single coils, etc.

Don't forget about the talent booster.
