Eminence Legend & Red Coat Series

I was just thinking how weird it is that Emi has two different series 'inspired' by celestion Speakers, legends and red coats.

For instance, I'm a very happy Legend GB12 user, I do know they are green back 'clones' but more efficient and with more bottom end, but they also have Private Jacks, also 'green backs' more efficient. Also SOLDANO uses Legend V12 in their cabs (V30s 'clones'), but the red coat series has Governors :8: yet again a version of Vintage 30.

So I'm curious, does anyone understand why they need two different series of speakers 'inspired' by the same ones?

dude, I get lost by it all, seriously. That's half the reason I record my thoughts here.

Re: Eminence Legend & Red Coat Series

The older Legend designs weren't very well marketed. Plus, Eminence as a whole seemed to be regarded more of an OEM speaker manufacturer. Instead of trying to push their old designs, my guess is that they decided to come out with an entirely new series (Red Coat, Patriot) as a serious competitor for after-market drivers.

The Red Coat line is MUCH more popular than I can remember the Legends were before they revamped everything. The reason they still have two different lines of celestion inspired speakers is probably so that fans of the Legends arn't left behind.

They do not sound anything like a vintage 30. I have one Krank cab with V12 Legends and another Krank cab with Vintage 30's side by side, and the V12 legends are bassier and harsher than the Vintage 30's. Plus they are 100W speakers while the Vintage 30's are 60W.

The Red Coat Governor is supposed to be a Vintage 30 slightly tweaked, but I don't think the V12 has an exact counterpart.

Yeah i think it's all marketing, but the general consensus is that the new ones are better. Nobody really talks about the old ones since they've come out.

The Legends are all classic sounding, and there are "multiple" Legend models. Every Legend is a little different but they all don't add tons of color to my ears.

None of the Legends nor RedCoats are V30 clones. The V30 is just a measuring stick by which most know the sound. For those who like the V30, having something near V30 sounding provides confidence that you have bought something you like. For those who don't like V30's, something a "little different" may rid one of the aspect they don't like about the V30's. In my experience, most of the speakers that label themselves as "V30 like", don't have the perceived downside I find in the V30. But, that doesn't mean the manufactures take on being "V30 like" will be the exact sound you want.

WGS pulls off the closest sound to the V30 to my ears.... and with a little bit less of the downside, that upper-mid spike, or rather the big drop before the spike of the V30.
