Eminence speakers

Yo dudes!

I'm interested in 2 speakers. One is the "Eminence Commonwealth" and the other one is the "Cannabis Rex", both as 12" speakers.

Since my Engl Screamer is pretty bright, which one would tame that beast. Or is it better to run for a complete different amp, since the Screamer is....well the Screamer.

The "Commonwealth" is very dark and has lots of headroom, jazzy stuff would be no problem since the clean of the Engl is shaweet, on the other hand there's no real brake up with the speaker. Since the Engl is an open back combo and the screamer is quite british voiced (mid heavy) I think any speaker is better than the V30.The Commonwealth costs here a fortune, I could buy a Celestion G12-65 for that price here.

The "Canabisrex" seems to be more balanced and costs much less. Also, it isn't as heavy as the Commonwealth.

What are your experiences/thoughts?

Re: Eminence speakers

Well Engls get most of their signature tone from the preamp. Speaker breakup can be neglected with most Engls so you'd want a speaker that doesn't break up(meaning high wattage speakers are prefered). Imo Engls don't sound good with speaker breakup, i found that out when hooking up my 100W Sovereign to a 4x12 with greenbacks. They started breaking up very soon and sounded farty even with low volume levels.
If i were you i'd have a look into the electro voice EVM speakers. They are pricey but you can find them used on ebay for good prices. The clarity and high wattage works very well with 1x12 open back combos and with Engl you'll want the preamp sound to come through as unaltered as possible.

Re: Eminence speakers

i use a cannabis rex in my deluxe reverb and i think it sounds fantastic, so do a bunch of my tone snob friends :D

its nice and warm but still speaks clearly

Thanks for the info. I read your review some days ago, seems to be a great "neutral" speaker but they are a bit expensive.

Thanks, you snobs :D

That's cool, they aren't expensive and I think they will deliver. I also found this thread HERE and it seems to work well with bright amps.

Re: Eminence speakers

Cannabis Rex all the way, baby! For me is the best sounding speaker for guitar ever made. You can play ANYTHING with'em.
