Eminence speakers

I've heard a pile of good talk about the emi legend gb128 speakers. Can someone offer somewhat of a decriptive comparison to the eminence wizards? These are for an open back 2X12 w/ kt66. I've tried some wizards but if anything I think the bass is flabby.

Re: Eminence speakers

The wizard is a bright speaker with a distinct upper-mid spike and a decent bottom end to it. I'm personally not a big fan of the speaker...maybe it's just because I've never tried it in anything that agreed with it. In any case it's far too bright for my tastes...I can't imagine it doing well in an open-back combo.

I'm a big fan of the Swamp Thang, personally.

You could always check out the soundclips for each speaker on the eminence website:

Re: Eminence speakers

the gb12 has imo more warmth and mojo. the wizard is rather modern.

regarding your bass problem: the wizard is ment to be placed in a sealed enclosure.
the gb12 would handle the open back better

Re: Eminence speakers

Is it just me, or are the majority of those sound clips are absolutely horrible?

What, you mean like the Duncan soundclips? ;)

The point is to hear the different EQ curves of the different speakers...If ya mess with the EQ to the point where each speaker sounds it's best you're kinda muddying up the results.

I think the Duncan clips sound pretty decent, actually.

I understand the point behind those clips just fine, but I think that they were recorded poorly with bad tones off the amp to begin with, which can ALSO muddy up the results. ;)

Re: Eminence speakers

The GB128's are nice speakers. They're warm, classic-rock, Greenback type speakers. They would not be my first choice (or second or third) if I wanted a tight speaker.

Re: Eminence speakers

I agree B2D.

I love Tomo, too. Nice guy, heck of a player. He did the clips.

But you're right, the initial sounds coming off the amp just aren't right.

Their "heavy" samples in particular. Like, heavy to me, means a really saturated Boogie or Marshall doing some palm muted metal riffs. Not the sludgey, muddy mess of a tone that's on there now.

Tomo is a good player and I'm sure he's a nice dude as well. I've heard some great sounding clips of him demoing other gear, so to hear those clips was kind of a letdown.

The clean tones were Ok. The OD tones were barely passable. The 'heavy' tones were atrocious... awful mess of a tone. I chalk it up to a poor recording and the wrong amp for the job.

Kinda sad as well beause I know these speakers sound good, but you'd never know it from those samples!

Re: Eminence speakers

I dunno if i'd call the wizard modern, or say it has an upper mid spike. I've tried it in both closed back 2x12's and 4x12's and it kind of seems like the SD Jazz in that it's vintage sounding but it does have some more modern characteristics or EQ changes that people complained about in the originals, but the vintage vibe is definitely there

Re: Eminence speakers

I'm not so impressed with those sound clips. The wizards *in my amp* sound nothing like the clips, so I might as well just ignore them. Right now the cab is populated by two 'legend modeling 128,' which are a discontinued 'generic' relatively neutral speaker. They're actually not bad, nice tight bass and not bass-heavy, but I'd like a bit more mids and a slightly (very slightly) scaled-back top. The wizards weren't bad in that respect (I did not find the top overly bright or spiky and it sure has more mids) but the bass is just flat-out beer-gut flab. Terrible - again, *in this amp* anyway. I want a Brit-voiced speaker with less bass flab. Anthony Lucas at Eminence suggested the gb128, supposed to be a bit tighter than an old greenback and a bit tighter than the private jack. Anyone in similar position and/or similar preferences have any alternate suggestions for me to check out? Thanks.

Re: Eminence speakers

I don't think your going to tighten up the bass by going to a smaller magnet speaker. I'm not much of an expert on Eminence, but if the GB12's are supposed to be more like Green Backs and the Wizards are suppossed to be more like G12H30's, then they could be worse off as far as flab. The G12H Celestions have tighter bass than the G12M Celestions in most cases. You might need to look toward Vintage 30's or eqivilant.

On edit: do you already have the Wizards or is it the other way around? I'm not clear about that. If your thinking about going to Wizards then that should give a comparitively tighter bass.

Re: Eminence speakers

I have the wizards, already took them out and put the modeling128 back in as the bass flab was just too much. Maybe it's an open back thing, although Ive heard from a number of people who were puzzled by eminence's closed-back recommendation as they had used them in open backs quite happily. Are you saying the vintage 30/governor is considered tighter than greenback/gb128/private jack?

Re: Eminence speakers

Yes, in the Celestion world the Vintage 30 has much tighter bass than the G12M Green Back. The G12M Green Back is known to be very flabby in open backed cabs, also moreso than the G12H.
