Re: ENGL Screamer combo

I've played one and it nails exactly what you're looking for.

Pretty decent cleans (better than the Marshalls, Mesas etc.) and killer articulate high gain. Nice amp. Played one used at GC a couple of months back.

Re: ENGL Screamer combo

If Marin doesnt message you first, get a hold of him and go to his soundclick site and download his clips using his screamer 50 combo. Most importantly take a listen to "jackie jazz", its just using the ENGL screamers clean channel and the sound is sparkling clear clean jazz heaven! Also take a look at his bluesy clips and pretty much everything else there, its mostly with that exact amp and will give you a great idea of the tone your in for.....which is great!

And all ENGL high gain stuff has great tone and clarity at the same time. You wont be let down.

Awesome amp, go for it!

Re: ENGL Screamer combo

I try this amp a few month ago... well, high gian, yes but lack of body and tone too, others amps in the same range of price, with less gain, like peavey classic 30 sounds better than the screamer for my opinion.
But if you try this one, and sounds well for you perfect, but compare with others befere buy one.

Man, I wish I had an Engl head when I was 15. Good for you. :)

I tried the Peavey classic before buying my Screamer and I have to say that it's neat little amp. It is very similar to Fenders Hot Rod Deluxe and I think that it was made to compete with it. It doesn't have a clean channel as good as the Fender (what else does?) but it has a usable gain.

Likewise the Engl doesn't have a as chimey clean as the Fender but the mid-gain and high gain are miles better than either the Peavey and Fender. It also has 4 usable gain stages and a usefull VLS (volume level) footswitch control. Last but not least, it has a usable balanced output for recording. Overall, it is a very versatile amp.

The clean channel is very interesting since it is very clean i.e. it has a lot of headroom. At medium volume, it's very difficult to get it to distort (with a OD pedal) even if you want to.

I would disagree that the Screamer lacks body and tone. These are both personal preferences and everyone has their own definition of tone. I found that Peavey slightly "thin" compared to the Engl and I could get all the Peavey tones out of the Engl but not vice-versa.

If you check web page in my signature, you will find some samples of Engl clips. As far as my definition of tone goes, the Screamer elegantly does it's job for it's price.

classic 30, not nearly enough gain for me. and it's only 2/5ths as much cheddar as the screamer :p
