Enlarging holes?

How do you enlarge a hole in a pickguard to fit a different size pot? I've always used a soldering iron, just stuck it all the way though, then cleaned up using a dremel, but I wanted to know if theres a less stinky way of doing it.

LOL! I just use the dremel to widen the hole. :laugh2: Bypass the soldering iron completely, and avoid those nasty fumes. :laugh2:

Re: Enlarging holes?

I actually only had to do this once... on my epiphone and all I did was take a pocket knife that got wider from the tip, put it in and twisted it till it made a 1/4" hole. It worked and didn't leave it looking ugly, either. I was happy with the results.

Re: Enlarging holes?

A countersink (Cleanup with a small rat-tailed file) is IMO the most professional way to do it (and therefore the way I do it) ;)

Althouzgh why I´ve never tried my peghole reamer is a good question, they seem almost predestined for this...

Re: Enlarging holes?

I'd use the peghole reamer and if necessary, smooth it out with the rat-tail file.

Is the peghole reamer a drill bit?

No.

A reamer will look a bit like a drill bit, but has an expanding taper up towards the handle. It doesn't have the "turns" of a drill bit either, the blades don't wrap around as much. It essentially looks like a hand-held drill bit, I suppose.
