Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

Any way you can play them first?

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

If you can't try before you buy, the differences will be:
1. weight - PRS SE is very light vs a typical LP
2. neck profile: PRS wide flat vs. ?? on the Epi LP?

If you can try both, then what is the difference in tone to you? Does the thicker slab of mahogany on an LP impart a difference vis-a-vis the thinner PRS SE?

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

ive checked them out to make sure they work. ive already played them both a little. they both sound good.

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

Seems you don't have a problem with tone from either, so it will still boil down to weight (important for an old geezer like me) and neck playability.

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

Based on my limited experience, I don't think the Chinese Epiphone factory was quite up to speed in 2005. I'd expect the details to be a little sloppy. But even then, you could sometimes find really light, resonant Chinese Epis that played and sounded great.

I'd be willing to bet the 2001 Korean PRS is pretty good. I've never played one; that Mark Tremonti lesson from that guitar mag a few years ago just made my skin crawl, and it's caused an aversion to PRS I'm afraid.

Spend more time with them. Pick whichever one you're more comfortable playing on.

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

im pretty new to all of this so i cant really say what feels best yet. only been playing about 6 months. i wanted to know which is the better value.

well personally im not sure, but im gonna go out on a limb and say the PRS is. Ive heard many people say great things about PRS's SE and CE line guitars. But In my opinion, value means nothing if you dont like the way the guitar feels. You could have a $6,000 gibson les paul and if you dont like how it feels and plays then what's the point?? As you play more and more and try out different gear you will learn what you like and what you dont like.

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

i have a couple of SE's
1 is a Santana model, there is no real difference between the Santana and a regular SE except for the neck inlays, and the "Santana" on the headstock.
The scale length on the PRS SE guitars are between a Gibson and a Fender-25"
If you prefer to have a volume control for each pick-up (as I do) then you will have to rewire/configure it IMO, you really can't get all a guitar is capable of w/ just a shared volume knob. The electronics are pretty good, as are the tuners.
The LP will all ready have 2 volume controls, more sustain, deeper tone, fatter neck, and a different scale length, if that matters to you. Everyone knows the EPI pickups and electronics are less than desirable as from the factory.
All personal preference.

I'd go with the PRS SE and spend the price difference on either machinehead or pickup upgrades. If the PRS has a vibrato bridge, I recommend blocking it off.

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

A good Epi LP is pretty nice, I have a few. Both guitars are reasonably priced...I'd get both.

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

The PRS for sure. They are just well built, good-playing guitars. All of them. Every one, with no exceptions. And hyperbole.

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

I have played a few Epis and liked them although, yes, they pickups need changed. The electronics in the modern ones arent bad at all though.
I only played one of the PRS SE models and was not impressed. Neither was the guy that owned it, all he did was moan about the pickups and how it wasn't that good of a guitar. I had to agree when I tried it, it felt cheap.

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

Does one of them... arouse you at all? Because if not, you should consider the possibility that you just might be... a Strat guy.

Re: epi classic lp or prs se santana

Between the two I would go for the PRS. I would probably leave the pickups and save my money for a good amp. This is assuming that there is no significant fret wear on either of them.

With those two guitars at those prices, the better value is the one you personally like better. If you've got the scratch, get both. That way you can spend some real time with both and figure out what you like. Maybe you sell one, and the other becomes your main guitar for ten years. Maybe you sell both; maybe you keep both. Maybe one sticks, and you end up getting a USA version later on, because you got comfortable with the import.
