Epi Dot owners...

What pickups do you have in your Dot? Right now I have stock pickups. I'm waiting for a set of PGs for my LP, and when those come in I'm going to put the Jazzn 59b in the Dot. I'm curious as to what others have in theirs and what your opinions of those pickups are in the Dot.

Re: Epi Dot owners...

I've had a couple different sets in my Sheraton. Seths, PG+, and PC's have all sounded great in it.

Re: Epi Dot owners...

In my Dot Studio I've got the stock ones.

I have a set of GFS Dream 180's ready to go in with the pots and everything ready to go but I've been heming and hawing over it, mainly because I've been playing it so much and finding that it sounds good to my ears.

I actually posted about getting some 59's or Seths or Ants to try and get me to get moving on it.

Re: Epi Dot owners...

I've been going back and forth about the stock pickups in mine Skarekrough. With certain amps, I can get a pretty decent sound. I just know that my Dot will sound killer with the Jazz/59. I'm hoping I'm right ;)

Re: Epi Dot owners...

I have a DiMarzio Virtual Hot PAF in the bridge and a Virtual PAF in the neck. Both are zebra with the screws on the black bobbin. Absolutely perfect!

Re: Epi Dot owners...

After trying quite a few different pickups in Dottie, I've settled on a Gibby '57 classic in the neck and a double cream Seth in the bridge. Best combo I've had in just about any guitar. I had a Gibby 490R ( I know it's a neck pickup!!) in the bridge for a while and I really liked it, but I couldn't pass up the deal on the Seth thanks to our very own kjrocks. Quite simply the most amazing pickup I've played on. I'm sure the Seth neck is just as amazing, and I'd like to get another 57 classic for some of my other guitars, but I think I'm done tinkering with the Dot, save for an RS wiring kit!

Re: Epi Dot owners...

I've always found that Epi's stock bridge humbucker, regardless of guitar, is WAY too hot for my tastes. I played a Dot that had a 57 Classic set in it, and the tone was much more balanced and clear than stock. I imagine a 59, PG, or Seth set would yield similar results. I'd even be tempted to try a Jazz set based on what I've heard about them.

Oh, it's hot...no doubt....

But in the band settings I've been playing it I've been going from Allman Brothers to Blue Oyster Cult to David Bowie and The Smithereens. I tend to rave things up a bit as well so the hotter pickups do take to this. I do find I spend much time working the volume knob for not as much a boost but getting the right tone for the mellower stuff.

For that, it works out. At worst I know the pickup is inferior to something like a Dimarzio Tone Zone.

I just need to bite the bullet and do it some day...

Re: Epi Dot owners...

It's probably an addiction however I've replaced all my Epi pups with Seymours...and most of the electronics in them come to think of it. ;)

I was seeking a vintage vibe for my Dot. That's what actually brought me to the forums. The threads I found recommended either Ants, Seths or '59s for pups. Ants if you wanted it to sound like a 50 year old 335; Seths if you wanted it to sound like a late '50s 335 sounded new off the wall; and '59s if you wanted a hotter sound, a new '60s 335 sound or if you wanted to sound like Larry Carlton. Obviously, I went with Seths.

I can't compare the Seths to all the other pups I've had in my Dot - because I haven't had any other than stock. For clean tones I believe the Seths make it sound bigger, a little more like an archtop, than a 335. This may be due to the 335s I've heard and played being newer and having hotter pups though. I can definitely get a good Wilbury's tone out of mine. I'm betting that if I had the chops, I could get a real passable Johnny A sound out of it too. If I dirty the amp up a bit, I can get real close to what Mark Kendall got on the earlier Great White albums (although I'm remembering Mark playing a Strat.) It also does a fairly good Izzy Stradlin.

Regardless, you can always swap out whatever you put in if you don't like
'em. There always seem to be bros on the Trading Post doing the same.
