Epi Slash Rosso Corsa thin sounding

I recently picked up an epi slash model with intentions of it being my main bar gig axe. My reasoning was I LOVE the big neck it has and the weight relieved body is lot easier on my back! I traded an epi 60s tribute plus LP that had the Slash set in it (i loved the tone of this guitar but hated the neck) expecting them to be similar in tone. Man was I wrong! The tone on the neck was ok but the bridge was useless. Very thin and lacking any guts. So I opened it up and found it had been worked on by someone who doesnt know how to solder at all and the pots were a mix of chinese and korean. I removed everything except the pups and installed switchcraft jack+swtich, CTS 500k pots, and MOJO vitamin T .22 caps. This helped a lot but I still havent been able to get this thing to where I need it to be. To me it sounds like it has single coils and isnt delivering that punchy fat humbucker sound that I am after (the bridge is brighter than my G&L ASAT w/ mfd pups).I have also tried I have an epi lucille that has the slash set in it also and I love it!

So obviously this guitar is super bright and needs different pickups to fatten up the tone! I play blues, blues rock, and classic rock. Right now tone wise my main guitar is an epi bonamassa lp w/bigsby and BB2+3 pups. This guitar sounds great and feels great but it is super heavy and kills my back!!

Lol no I am not addicted to signature model guitars but I just got some really good deals on these!

Also because I had them on hand, I tried a couple of different magnets in the slash's. I tried an A3 in the neck and it seemed to suck what lil life it had out of it. I also tried a RC UOA5 in the bridge and didnt really notice much difference.

I have a JB on hand that I am going try as soon as I can and may also try the JB with A2 mag swap just because it is a lot cheaper than pups but I wanted to see what all of the tone gurus here thought would be the best options.

59's with A4s are pretty thick, similar to my A2Ps. Could be an alternative if the Slash pups aren't cutting it.

But if they sound like single coil, that sounds like something is seriously wrong, like a positive connection is not soldered correctly.

Did you review the wire colors, or could it be wired in parallel or split? It's not normal that it sounds SO different from your previous experiences.

That is what I kept thinking too! I keep going over it and not finding any problems. The output levels are pretty consistent with my other guitars just the tone is way off??? I will dig into the wiring again and triple check

The Slash pups are single conductor. But I am going to go over the wiring again as soon as I have time!

Duh! You are completly right. I suppose they could be wrongly internaly wired from the factory (the two coils out of phase or something) but I've never seen that happening on a mass-producted pickup.
