Any opininons on these? I am wanting a semi-hollow body bad. Funds are limited, I don't play out, I have been playing for about 20 years, looking for a half decent box for blues, hard rock. Let me know. Thanks

Play a bunch before you buy. The good ones are very good and the bad ones are just that, bad. Try for the one with the strongest acoustic voice, then swap out the pots, cap, and change the pickups to something you like and you'll be all set.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studios....?

Benj nailed it. I have played a couple of those that were just - Ahhhhhhhhhh! And I've played a lot, most, that wll, they played. And I've played a number that were junk. Set up on those has never impressed me either. Gotta take that into account.

I have an awesomne Custom idea for onbe - just need to find it in bright red...

You know, regular epi dots can be really good. More better epi dots than dot studios. And...for about $400, you can usually find an AMAZING/KILLER Sheraton II.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studios....?

True about the Sheratons. Mine is one of the best sounding axes I own, including my US Hamer and Fenders.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studios....?

Once again there are some real gems out there, but you will have to look at more to find the one. And when you do, the Dots are a great semi hollow.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studios....?

You're talking to the right guy. I love 335's but won't pay the price for a Gibson. Necessity being the mother of invention, I've figured out how to affordably get the look, sound, & feel of a Gibson. Over the years, I've bought at least 10 various Epi 335's, all were used. I WOULD NEVER own a Dot Studio, just too many basics left off. Looks SO cheap.

For $200-250, you can get a used Epi Dot Std in great condition, & for under $300 a flame-maple Dot Deluxe. For a little more than that, you may find a Sheraton. I've been very pleased with all the ones I've bought. Sheratons are made the same as a Dot, but with a few extra cosmetics, like gold hardware, extra binding, & block inlays. If you don't need the flash, don't pay for it.

I upgrade the PU's with used SD's, DiMarzio's, & Gibson's. So for the cost of a new Dot Studio, I can get a used Dot Std with upgraded PU's, that sounds like a $2,000 guitar.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studios....?

...and again - CHANGE THE PICKUPS!!!! And I'm not just saying that because of the forum I'm on :) My 335 has a '59 in the bridge, and the difference is quite remarkable, particularly on clean sounds - it just makes the guitar shine.

And electronics are cheap and not so relaible - but beware when taking it into a repair shop, cos they have to get their little tools in through the sound holes, and that's tricky - so they may well charge you more for the job. Decent guitars - a bit of work away from being really good guitars!

Re: Epiphone Dot Studios....?

Mine still floors me with how good it plays and sounds....it's the only axe I've had for as short a length of time and looks as good as it still does and has THAT much fret wear on it.

It's the Tomato Red model. I had the electronics gutted and set up with stacked pots for independent volume and tone, Hovland caps and a set of custom hand-wound pickups from Vintage Vibe Guitars.

The thing just smokes nine ways to Sunday and plays phenomenally.

i spent almost ten years playing hollowbodies before I found this one. I put my hands on everything from Gibson Historics to Epi's to Ibanez, etc.

This Epi Dot Studio is the one that had it above and beyond all others.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studios....?

I have to say, I was not impressed with the Dot Studio. The p90 Casino on the other hand, is one hell of a guitar.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studios....?

i picked up a epi dot about 3 months ago. since then ive gutted the electronics, replaced them with cts and switchcraft and dropped a set of aph2s in there. it sounds amazing right now. my next step is to replace the nut with a bone one and set it up properly then i figure i will have a top notch guitar.

well worth the money if you can find one of the good ones

Re: Epiphone Dot Studios....?

Looks pretty... but I've heard some live and they can give screechy feedback...

Well, that's the case with pretty much any hollow. I've really liked three or four of the dots I have played, Epiphone do put out the odd really great guitar, my LP Classic PLus being one of them.
