Epiphone Jack Casady

I've been toying with the idea of acquiring one of these for a long time; haven't played a semi-hollow in many years and have always wanted one.

Reviews I've read have been consistent in terms of one possible flaw: The top strap button seems to be placed so that the bass is prone to neck dive.

Wondering if anyone has personal experience with one of these.

Re: Epiphone Jack Casady

I'm used to neck dive on a lot of basses. The only way I have ever really avoided it on neck heavy basses is by putting the strap up super high (which is uncomfortable so I don't do it). Yes though, it does seem to have neck dive issues. It doesn't help that the body is semi-hollow either; she's got no anchor!

Thanks for all the replies.

Ouch. This could be a real dealbreaker. I wear my basses what some might say is really low.

I guess I should try one out at a local store.

Indeed, if you can find one to try out that would be the best call IMO.

Could put some weight on the strap, like a wireless transmitter. (Or something else that's the right counter-weight.)

Re: Epiphone Jack Casady

I countered a lot of the neck dive on my SG and my Echotone by putting some lead weights in the body underneath the pickups. The JC is all neck and is pretty spartan on the hardware side, so there's really nothing to balance out the bass. Another thing would be to move the strap button to the top horn rather than on the back of the neck.

Thanks--I thought of that but had no idea as to whether that would screw up the body somehow. I would probably leave the original strap button where it is and just put in another one on the top horn.

It won't mess it up, unless you screw up with the drill. The only thing will be that you'll have a hole in the back of the neck where the button would have been.

I’d let my guitar tech (who does work on all my basses) do it. I'd rather he screw it up. :poed:

As I said above:

I wouldn't want a little hole.

Thanks!

No problem. Good luck with the bass. They sound killer and I believe they come stock with flatwounds

The opposite of the Jimmy Page style, so the bass body is almost under your chin?

Re: Epiphone Jack Casady

Do this at your peril. There is only the thickness of the body rim for the screw to bite into.

Thanks for the warning. The good news is that guy who works on all of my basses would never do anything that's inadvisable either structurally or technically. He's talked me out of a few bad ideas over the years.

I'll have to try one of these and see how the strap in the regular position feels at the height to which I'm accustomed.
