Epiphone SG Custom Limited

Hi guys,

i just bought an Epiphone Custom Limited SG with a maestro tremolo. Stock pups were 57 classic plus and two 57 classic. I was looking for an SD pup similar to the gibson classic 57 plus. I tried a SD SH-5. Now I have two questions:
1) The SG seems to have a different spacing so the last three pool pieces (g h e string) are not exactly under the strings. Is that normal?

2) What would match a gibson 57 classic plus and have the exact same spacing?

Since here are alot of people in this forum who know so much about PUP can anyone tell me if the gibbson 498T would be a good choice? (music style claasic rock to hardrock).

By the way sorry for my english (I`m german). Any comment are welcome.

Re: Epiphone SG Custom Limited

If you have real Gibson (not Epiphone) 57 Classics why not use those? They're the best Gibson makes (you know that the Epi "57 Classic" has nothing in common with the Gibson "57 Classic" other than the fact that they're both PU's).

I have a few 498T's, which are a good high output PU, but can be a little bright & slightly grainy-sounding. I put A4 or A8 magnets in mine to warm them and they sound great. But really, the '57 Classic is still a better PU.

The pole pieces don't have to be exactly under the strings. They'll work fine regardless.

Are you looking for a high output PU, is that why you want to switch? My favorite high output PU's are SD Custom 5's and Gibson 498T's. If you're into metal, the Custom would work too (has a ceramic magnet). If you're into classic rock & blues, you'll probably perfer an alnico, as they're warmer & have more character to them. You could put an A8 in you '57 Classic plus (it's a much higher output magnet than an A2).

BTW, I have an Epi SG Custom with maestro too (what a beautiful guitar). I put a Custom 5 in the bridge, a Phat CatN in the middle, and a '59N in the neck. If I get another HHH guitar, I'll use a PAF type HB in the bridge, and Phat Cats in the middle & neck.

THX blueman for taking your time to answer me. I was hoping for you to answer cause I already followed a few of your posts and know that you really know a lot about pups.

No I don`t have gibsons classics pups they are just epiphone. And I don`t like epiphone a lot. I used to be a high gain player for many years using emgs. Got tired of that streil tone and switshed to SD and like these pups. I`m using a PRS singlecut with SD4 bridge and APII neck for the high gain sounds. For my second guitar I bought this marvelous epipghone custom limited SG with maestro. I tried to go with 3 SD59. I sounded cool but the bridge position lecked a bit of power. So I liked the idea of a vintage tone but with more output like the gibbo 57 classic plus.

Is the SD SH-5 the custom 5 pup that you have in your epiphone SG? I want a hotter vintage PU and I like the sound of the SH-5. I discovered adding 1/3 of the volume of the middle pu gives the tone a more vintage vibe. Just using the bridge pu give a more rock tone. But the heigh e and the b string are really beside the pole pieces. I have the feeling tha theiy lack a little bit of cutting through. I hope you understand what I say.

So is the custom 5 and the SH-5 are the same pickups (might be a silly question but I need to be sure)?

Re: Epiphone SG Custom Limited

Ok I got it now. Blueman is talking about the SH-14 and not the SH-5. I listened to the sound samples and I finally think I know what I`m looking for. THX Blueman you helped me a lot. I will give the SH-14 a try. That seems exactly to be what I was searching for. Vintage tone but more power to it.

THX again.

Hi,

found this video un you tube. It is the exact same guitar I bought. Hope the link works. Here it is:

It just doesn`t look beautiful it also sounds fantastic compared to its pri`ce value level. Last ones made in Korea. Since Epiphone moved their construction line to China they just simply suck. I played so many Epiphone among real expensive guitars and the EPiphone alway looked good in quality and sound. Since then never heard any good guitar coming from China. So I was lucky to find this SG Custom Limited overseen in some store and just bought it real cheap right away. Awesome piece of gear.
