Epiphone SG project

I'm replacing the pickups in my Epiphone SG for a school project and I'm looking for recommendations on humbuckers. I mostly play punk rock and heavy metal.

Re: Epiphone SG project

In an SG, if you want to cover both punk and metal, a Custom would be great. A lot of guys here will recommend a Custom 8, which requires changing a magnet but will sound a bit more organic. I don't recommend the JB in an SG as it tends to not like being in Mahogany very much.

Edit. I forgot to mention neck humbuckers. In the bridge, I think the Custom or Custom 8 is your best bet. For the neck, it really depends on what you want from your neck tones. A '59 would be an excellent neck humbucker for cleans in an SG. The '59 is too boomy in the neck for a lot of guys in a Les Paul, but it should work perfectly in an SG. The Jazz is good too, but I the '59. You can go with the Phat Cat for P90 tones, or look at GFS Mean 90s since those have the right magnet (Phat Cats use A2 for some reason). Of course you can go with a higher output pickup too.

A C8 (Custom with an A8 magnet) and a '59N, ideal in SG's for rock and metal.

Listen to this man. If this is for a school project, you can also add the magnet change experience, make the Custom 8 and do yourself and your ears a favor.

As far as low-end pickups go, the Epiphone G-400 pickups aren't bad. They are smothered in wax. Take the covers off and scrape some of the wax off the tops and they sound much more open. Worth experimenting with. You could also try magnet changes on those first before messing with more expensive Duncans.

I've got a bunch of Epi's, and have upgraded PU's in all of them. The stock PU's leave a lot to be desired as far as tone quality, clarity, and depth go. The weakest link on an Epi. They're 'serviceable' and that's about it. Not made to compete with any quality PU.

You can get used Duncan's for around half price online.

Re: Epiphone SG project

I most certainly agree and have always advocated the C8 in the bridge of an SG. In the neck I prefer a Demon or a Pearly over the '59.
