Epiphone Valve Jr. Any good?

I want to get myself a new practice/travel amp and originally I wanted the Vox Deacy, but they cant get any.

So I was looking at two others in two different price ranges,

The Pignose 7-100 and the Epiphone Valve Jr. combo.

How do they sound for blues-rock?

And with or without a pedal infront, can they do a Brian may like sound? Especially thinking of the one on The Show must go on.

And any general opinions/experiences of both would be cool :)

Thanks alot.

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Any good?

No amp out there is gonna give you the Brain May tone...that requires several things but the Epi Valve Jr is a neat little amp and IMO it sounds pretty damn good for the scratch...

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Any good?

That + a treble booster and a celestion blue (or the like) speaker will get you maybe close to some of his stuff - as said above, his tone will never really be nailed....

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Any good?

The head version is supposed to be really good. I've got the special that has a few more knobs - master volume etc and for the $$ is really good. There are modding sites out there if you that way inclined. I've changed the speaker in mine to a Celestion and its improved the tone.

Do a search there are quite a few threads on this topic.

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Any good?

I've got the Head. I love it.... I use it as practice amp. I also use it to amplify my PODXT once in a while. The V.J. loves pedals... You may want to get at the very least a reverb and an overdrive pedal. One of the best $99.00 I ever spent. Mine is still original but there are tons of mods and suggestions for different brand tubes out on the net and in various forums.

It is also a very loud 5 watts!

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Any good?

I am only searching for something in the ballpark.

A EMG 81 is also my other limiting factor.

How does the Pignose sound?

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Any good?

I bought one with the intention of modifying it, but I really like the tone in stock form. And I don't feel the need to add any tone stack to it since I have a bunch of pedals. The Valve Jr. sounds really cool with pedals.
