Epiphone Valve junior

Re: Epiphone Valve junior

well, the head has 4/8/16 Ohms outputs. the combo only has one of them.
that's a good point for the top (i heard they can be added, because the
windings exist on the OT, but i didn't prove it on my own due to i own the head)

the combo's internal speaker has a horrible reputation - i didn't hear it on
my own, but i haven't read a single friendly word about it.
that's a point against the combo
so if you choose the combo, you may want another speaker additionally.

you anyway need some nice tubes to get a natural bright sound

I've had one since......I dunno about march, or may (one of those months that starts with M). I like it, even though I've had some problems with it. At one point it just started shooting sparks, and smoking. But it never happened again since that one time, haha.
its a kool little amp for the money. But if ya really want it to sound good, your gonna have to mod it somewhat. Stock they sound alright, But they're really dark sounding, so ya might need to do some tone mods. The older ones (which I have) had a major problem with huming and buzzing (two distinct annoying sounds at once!), but the mods to fix em are easy to do. The newer ones are suppoused to not have that problem, But I haven't tried a newer one so I can't really verify that.
anyways, its a kool amp. And if your looking for sumthing to use for practice working on amps, Its deffinately kool to have. Since I've gotten mine I've learned alot about how amps work, just from doing mods to get rid of the hum, and tone mods an stuff. An the best part is, If you totally destroy it, Its not that Big of a deal. At least not as big of a deal as it would be if it were a Fender Twin or sumthing anyways.

I have the combo (the special with master volume and on board effects - don't bother with these) and its a great little amp for messing about with - changed the speaker on mine to a Celestion Tube 10 and it improved the sound no end. Keep meaning to swop the tubes but never seem to get round to it!

I liked the Epiphone but seriously preferred the Laney LC models (cheaper too!)

Re: Epiphone Valve junior

Mercury magnetics makes a mod kit that I guess really makes them into a decent amp. But the mod kit cost 4x what the amp does... :|
