Also, I thought that speakers (size) affected your tone more than the tubes themselves...

what you are talking about is the difference between Tube brands or tube variations. Replacing Old tubes that are worn out makes a WORLD of difference. If it is the tubes that are the problem (which I'm sure it is) then when you replace them, you should find it to bring your amp to life.

i really like the GE style 6L6's from both gt and tad but i think the rca style from either of those companys might have a bigger bottom but probably wont have as rich a tone to the mids

Thanks for all of the advice! I just want to confirm: the preamp tubes don't probably don't need replacing, the power tubes do need replacing along with the filter caps. Is that correct?
