Equivalent to Fender Texas Specials - telecaster

Re: Equivalent to Fender Texas Specials - telecaster

IMO, none of them is.

Quarter Pound models have the increased output. The Li'l '59 rocks and still manages some twang. The Custom Shop '53 Tapped Tele Lead pickup has increased output in one of its modes. Money no object, I would buy the BG-1800.

Funkfingers,
I have a tele with str1/stl1b. Now i have another tele , and want this one with more gain, fat sound, but still with the twang.... I was thinking about Str2 set, or str3 set, or the Jerry Donahue.... But never played any of them.. What do you think about these? I play rock. I don't play country.

Re: Equivalent to Fender Texas Specials - telecaster

For my G&L Tribute series ASAT Classic, I stole the idea for upgrading the pickups from the Chapman Guitars ML-3 RC (Chappers' signature model). Li'l '59 for Telecaster and Hot Rails for Telecaster Neck models.

Since I am not a fan of the sounds of these pickups used individually in coil split mode, I may upgrade the three-way pickup selector switch with one of those clever Schaller Megaswitches.

Re: Equivalent to Fender Texas Specials - telecaster

Why not just get the Fender Texas Specials for Tele? They are fatter and meatier than vintage style Tele pickups but still twang a bit. The QPs really seem to retain the treble bite that is lost to over winding on other pickups.

I'm with FunkFingers though, I still really want to do a BG-1400/Antiquity HB Tele, a la Micawber. Not traditional Tele at all, but a great compliament to the vintage loaded one.

Play rock, eh? I'd say you'd like STL-2 Hot Tele. Don't let the dcr fool you. Output wise, it's in P-90 and PAF ballpark. I installed it in my friend's tele recently and it pairs really well with P-90 in the neck. It is great for that blues kinda slightly breaking up thing. It delivers clarity in distortion too with firm low end. The frequency is balanced. What surprises me is that it's a pretty dynamic pickup. It's not a beast like QP that relatively hard to tame. Depends on your technique, it can give you some twang but it is more a rock oriented pickup. If you go with it, I'd suggest you pair it with SM-1 or SP90-1 in the neck since you already have vintage tele set.
