hi.
What are the best pickups to get EJ tone? (The neck clean tone like in Manhatan...)

SSL1? SSL5 in the neck? Alnico II?

Re: Eric Johnson

If you use a Twin Reverb a butt load of chorus, echo and reverb almost any true single coil will do just fine.

Eric tends to leave most of his Strats stock and he leans to 50's Strats most of the time so for that sound I'd go SSL-1's...

Re: Eric Johnson

The key to Eric's tone is a low output single coil with a tone pot rolled way down

SSL-1's will do it just fine

Re: Eric Johnson

I don't know why, but this guy makes me think of that episode of south park when they were farting in their wineglasses and smelling it.

Re: Eric Johnson

Stock or Vintage style SC's such as the SSL-1. And at one time he swore by the Dimarzio HS-2 stacked SC disconnected and used as a true SC that were in his 54' Strat 'Virginia'.

"Virginia" is a 57 and the HS-2 is still in there but only in the bridge...

That´s a common misconception ,Ej doesn´t roll his tone controls down that much actually, his bridge tone control stays at 7-8. :)

For the tone the OP asks about, neck pickup clean tone of Manhattan, any good single-coil with vintage voicing will do, but you need a nice blackface Fender or two as well. :)
