Ernie ball musicman guitars? Got input?

Hey guy's. As I stated in the What product are you gassing for in 2006 thread, I noodled around with a EB Luke at GC this weekend and was completely blown away. The build quality and feel of this axe was sweet! The price, considering it is a hand made in america guitar is not bad either at $1300. The neck profile is a pronounced V shape that I found to be odd at first but very addicting after just a few minutes of play time. This Luke had the vintage trem, which I think Would be cool or even better would be a string thru as I already have another OFR equipped guitar. Having said that, I see the Axis super(sport or something) has the fixed bridge. I have not been able to get my hands on an Axis and wonder how the two compare?

Re: Ernie ball musicman guitars? Got input?

I used to have an MM-90 Axis (fixed bridge), it was an awesome guitar. the neck is an asymetrical shape- no V, it's very round. They also have a 1 5/8" nut, which I don't like on most guitars, but it worked on this one. I have to say, the Axis has one of the most comfortable necks I've played, sad I gave it up.

The attention to detail on any EB is phenomenal. You will not be let down.

Most underrated guitar brand on Earth, IMO. I have yet to play one that felt junky. The necks are so fast!

I'll echo the other's comments. MM makes killer instruments and I've never touched one I didn't want to buy...I'm in the market for something with an OFR, and if I find the right MM I'll probably buy it.

A few months ago a local shop had a used silhouette; If I had had enough money I would have picked it up. The tone was great and it was the lightest guitar I have ever played.

Now I have GAS

As much as I like MM's, I just can't deal with how small they feel. I'm 6'1" with long fingers, so the whole guitar, especially the neck, just feels like an electric mandolin in my hands.

I've got fat, stubby fingers and those necks stil feel small. That is its only downfall. They are major tone machines.

My best friend is 6'6" and partial to Explorers and 335s. He says strapping on a MusicMan is like wearing a pair of Speedos -- it ain't naked, but it's damn close.:eek13:

I love the things. Even at 6'3" and with long fingers, I don't find them too small at all. Very comfortable to play, awesome quality. The EVH/Axis has been on the top of my G.A.S. list since it came out. Haven't been able to snag one yet even after all these years.

Re: Ernie ball musicman guitars? Got input?

What's funny is that the basses are big and have a chunky neck, but the guitars are the polar opposite. I still like some guitar models though. I recently tried out the Petrucci model. I hated the DiMarzios, and it just felt weird in my hands. I think the old VH models are my favorite, out of all of them.

my ernie ball rocks out hard BUT the frets on it wore out faster then any i've ever seen....

Re: Ernie ball musicman guitars? Got input?

The Axis has a fatter, rounder neck with small width compared with the Luke, and the Luke's body edges are all much more rounded out.

Personally the EB neck back/fingerboard aren't my taste, but they're among the higher quality guitars made in America no-doubt.

Re: Ernie ball musicman guitars? Got input?

well, the MMs have a great neck joint - one of the best of bolt on designs, IMO.

still, you always should get a neck you love, or else you won't play it.

I have an Albert Lee, and it's a great little ax. They make up for the vintage narrow necks by making them fairly deep, round and fat in profile. I know the other models have different profiles though.

if you are around MM fans, they always rave about the oil finishes, and don't mention the size. :)

as with other "second tier" brands, as far as demand, you can find great deals used, like I did.

personally I like the Silhouettes, except for the pickups,

but I believe the Lukes and Petrucci's are the most popular models.

if you want want to go the new route, I'd recommend talking to Brian @ chuck levin's music.

There is also a EB forum if you have other questions.

i love my silo special- not too keen on the original silos with 24 fret necks, but the specials are awesome. I have duncan-zed mine; you can read about it @ http://www.hazardfactor.com/dave/guitars.htm about 3/4 down the page- there are pics too.

also, EB/MM does what all comanies should do- make a snap on connector to the output jack. i can change pickguards, all pre-wired with different pickups in about 5 minutes.
The new Morse Y2D EM/MM is an amazing guitar as well- I want one!
