ESP/J. Frog Lynch "Mom" on eBay!

Hey-

I just spotted a ESP/J. Frog Lynch "Mom" skeleton guitar (as seen in the "It's Not Love" video). I have a few questions reguarding it's authenticity though. I know ESP came out with a reissue of the original J. Frog skeleton in the early 90's. They were crudely carved, and from what I've read, really just collector's items that were not meant to play. Horribly high action, poor fret work, in general very bad quality ESPs. The paint on them was more brownish as well.

Real J. Frog skeletons have the J. Frog bone logo on the headstock in huge letters, and no ESP decal whatsoever. The shape of the reverse explorer headstock is more Kramer-like as well. Real Frogs sport genuine Floyds, not the Kahler that's on this one.

I'm suspecting that it's a good quality carve on a cutom order ESP (before they came out with the reissues). The Lynch signature does look authentic. Take a look yourself...

This is the glued-on skeleton ESP version.
It's a joke compared to the original Frog ... complete waste of money!!

There was an article on Ed Roman website but I cant find it back. It was comparing the copies with the originals.

I don't know what to say. I do know what to ask though, do you play all your Lynch models, or do you keep them for display? That's a pretty impressive collection!

I rotate them once in awhile. Right now, I'm onto my Skulls n' Snakes. Very good tone on this particular ESP Lynch. Honduran Mahogany wood, oil finished neck, Kahler Steeler licenced Floyd Rose. Made in NYC. Probably my favorite ESP Lynch.

The only one I don't play is the Custom Shop Reverse colored Serpent. Lefty body, flamed maple top with colored serpent graphics ontop of a transparent sunburst. Maple fretboard and Original Floyd trem. I hear that for the original run, ESP only made 10 of these! 5 went to buyers in Japan, and 5 to US and Canada. It's a super beautiful guitar, and I want to keep it in perfect condition. Maintaining them can be a chore sometimes- but I guess that's the price you pay when you choose to schlep around a bunch of guitars.

Twilight- look closely at the carve job. I think it's a legitimite ESP, maybe a custom shop before they mass produced the yucky brownish glued on bones version. But how do you explain the #665 serial number? Man- that'd be SPOOKY to have #666! I'll try to find some pics of the crappy ESP bones so you can compare.

Here's the link to the Ed Roman page that shows the crappy ESP bones:

Ed fails to state for the record that the original J. Frog bones had cherry wood additions (both hands as well as the skull) glued onto the alder Warmoth strat body!

Yeah, I think this is a custom carve job, not an off white ESP glue job.
Still, for that money, I'd rather have one carved by the man himself ...

Re: ESP/J. Frog Lynch "Mom" on eBay!

I just got an email from ESP tech support. He says that it's NOT one of the 25 they built in 1999-2000. He told me that the limited run of the Skull and Bones model only had original Floyd's on them- not Kahler licensed ones, and did not have the two drilled holes for the locking nut on the back of the neck. He suspects that it was either a genuine hand carved J Frog model with an illegal ESP decal or possibly an altogether counterfeit guitar- neither an ESP or a J Frog! He was sure it wasn't an ESP though.

The lynch models are so crazy, I think they are a little to crazy for me I would't want to play it. I would Display it haha. They are nice works of art. Well, not all lynch models I would just display I know a person who had the one with a tiger patern on it I think. I tried it out once, it was a spectacular guitar.
