Esquires Vs Teles

Hey ho fender brainy people,

I've noticed that fender, as well as the telecaster, are selling another line of guitars called "esquires" which... well, look awfully like teles, onlu with single bridge pups or mad racing stripe paint jobs. What's the deal? How are they different from teles so that they get their own name?

Esqure was the first fender guitar proper, much like the tele, only with one bridge single coil. The modern esquires have developed into hotrods of sorts. The tele came after the esquire, with the added neck pickup.

yeah, all an esquire is is any tele with only a bridge pickup. so that goes for ones that look just like regular teles but dont have a neck pickup, and also the hotrod ones you see more recently and stuff

yeah, they're making some with 3 way toggles now

lord knows what the hell they're used for, but if you only use the bridge pickup anyways I'd say they're more up your ally than a regular tele.

Strangley enough i really want an old esquire. Despite the fact i usually play with the neck humbucker of a les paul with the tone rolled off under heavy gain...

I love simple old stuff.

lord knows what the hell they're used for, but if you only use the bridge pickup anyways I'd say they're more up your ally than a regular tele.

The front position has a cap that makes it bassy--this was Fender's idea to emulate a bass guitar. The middle is tone control in the circuit and the rear position bypasses the tone control, giving you a hotter signal with more harmonics (in my experience). The front position is kinda useless, so some people wire in a cap that simulates the tone knob rolled back to whatever level of warmth they desire.

The diff between the tone of an Esquire and Tele is pretty big, as not having the extra magnet (neck pu) really makes a difference. On mine, harmonics seem to be everywhere.

hm, this intrigues me

i was gonna go for 2 teles, one lil 59/jazz set, one with basically the same pups as the j5 tele, hot rail & whatever the hell the neck one is, but now i may have to go with an esquire with a rail, prolly hafta change out the front position though, maybe i'll make it like...a coil tap or something

i like these Esquires now too. Idk why but I have been just wanting a tele recently...its strange. Im a humbucker guy, but from what I have heard a teles single coil in the bridge can hold its own...whats the difference in sounds (humbucker (bridge) Vs. Single Coil Bridge(Tele)?

Esquires/Teles have got balls! In other words they're great for metal and punk. Real punchy and aggressive.

could one simulate an esquire's tones by lowering their neck pickup all the way and using the bridge pickup alone? Does string pull do that much damage to tone on these guitars?

You can play ANY type of music on ANY type of guitar. Some guitars are better suited for different purposes obviously, but yes, Esquires can be used for metal. Can you say John 5 (Marilyn Manson) or Joe Strummer (the Clash)? Steve Clark recorded a lot of "Pyromania" with a Tele.

mmmmmmmmmmmm esquire.....

I'm really tempted to just go esquire when I get my tele, just a single 54 broadcaster PU it'll look like that one but with a black guard. I was planning on putting a strat neck PU in it or a regular tele neck for the middle position sounds, but the simplicity of the esquire is very appealing for some reason.

i'd reccomend a hot rail or lil '59 for metal, but punk, yeah it could do it, hell, people did punk on stock strats back in the day, and esquires are a helluva lot meaner

i do metal on my strat with surfers and i get a more searing/sustaining/singing lead tone than my Ibanez with high output buckers.

I think you could do punk on any guitar, power chords aren't really 'tone picky', i got a good 'punk tone' with my GAX 70 through my crate mx25RC solid state....not that i play punk at all, anywhooo

I'm leaning toward doing an Esquire thing with the aluminum bodied Tele I'm building, only it will have a P-90 in the bridge. Does that count? I can't figure out what I want to do with the neck, so it is more through indecision than anything else. I don't even know the last time I used a neck pickup for more than ten minutes. A SINGLE BRIDGE PICKUP RULES ALL! :saeek:
