ever use "Cool" brand picks

Anybody ever hear of these? Some have a sandpaper-like grip, some have a really thin (couple micron) "rubber"(?) layer where you grip them. They all seem to have a pointier tip than a standard pick.

I only found a couple references to them in a search here, and they were kind of old. Would appreciate any feedback from anyone who's tried them and which models you tried.

Thanks!

Brian

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

Hey Brian...I was a Fender med guy for decades, started using Dava flex picks about 3 years ago...swore by 'em. My co-guitarist uses the cool pics, just for giggles I tried one...now, it's all I'll use. Love the blue sandpaper grip, we use med .08 and it has just the right stiffness/flex. It's downside is it gets easily chewed up and rounded, especially the heavy way I play and zing...so I carry a piece of 600 grit sandpaper to smooth the edge and sharpen the point....works great. Try one...it's a great pick.

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

Idk what models they are but I've used the sand-papery grip ones and rubber grip ones (thin picks) and I like 'em alright.

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

I've used picks with coarse grips and it was almost too much. I found out that I need to be able to shift the pick around at times. Who knew?
My favourite atypical brand is from the British mint, but they're no longer made. Just like Brian May, I like sixpences. Great tone, and a serrated edge for fun sounds.

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

I used the sandpaper grip ones for a while. Except for the special grip stuff, they feel a lot like the white claytons (acetal I think?), with a slightly sharper shape. I bought out all of them in my gauge from the stores around here, and when I tried to order 100+ more they said no, hehe. Nice picks, but I ultimately didn't care enough to use them over the .80 claytons.

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

I use the bright blue sandpaper ones exclusively. I went through several kinds trying to find one that suited me and this one won out I guess. I like that it's slightly smaller than a regular pick but bigger than the Jazz IIIs. The Jazz III XLs are pretty good though - more or less the same size as these Cool ones.

When I do use a pick;I use these. I have for years and they work fine for me.

About a year ago I built a new Strat that has some cool graphics on it & I had an image engraved on the neck plate. I had the image on the neck plate printed on a black .88 Tortex so it matched my guitar.

I was just out in Santa Rosa a few weeks ago for the guitar show and I bought a couple of picks made from Buffalo horn. They sound amazing but I really don't like the shape. They feel really awkward in my hand and certain techniques that I use a almost impossible to accomplish with them. They were pricey too. Like $5.00 each!

Yeah, I typically use tortex yellows and oranges, but the cools intrigued me, especially their Ultra "Studio and Recording" model. Their made out of some weird material that is quite different than anything I've ever used.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Any more cool users, feel free to post your comments. Thanks!

Custom graphics require pics please (of both the guitar and your pick :naughty:). Also, did you have to order an obscene amount of custom picks from Dunlop?

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

i was using 5 dollar gravity picks until my jazz teacher showed me one cool pick today. Sounded bigger than anything i have tried

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

I really like the translucent white ones with the blue sandpaper grip... nice and snappy. Their celluloid picks are very good quality as well.

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

I use the Cool, Ultra pick. I like the size and feel of it. The downside to the Ultra pick is that it wears fast.

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

I have had some of the white picks with bluegrip for years. Love the grip, but usually not a fan of the tone amd stiff attack.

Urgh, I was keeping a weather eye out for threadcromancy and this one caught me anyway. Also, I'm pretty sure I replied in BrianS's thread about cool picks back in 2011. Or maybe I'm dreaming.

I think we should put eco7077 on the pedestal of shame.

Necro bump

I recently tried one of their Beta Carbonate .60mm I had buried in a box and really like it for acoustic, and want to get some more.

Anyone know if Cool Picks are still available? They have a web site but no one seems to carry them online other than Elderly, with a minimal selection.

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

The Cool Picks I tried were a little snappy for my taste, but I'd be willing to give them another try. I liked the material, and if I could find them in a Jazz III shape, I'd try them again.

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

For decades I used a green .88mm Tortex Sharp, but when my arthritis caused my grip to loosen the pick would rotate between my fingers while playing (No Bueno). About 4 years ago I switched to the black .88mm Cats Tongue pick by Cool Picks. Only one store in town carries the whole line in stock. Still available on Amazon, of course. When I play a mandolin, mandocello, mando-uke, 12 string guitar, or anything with double courses, I use the red .073mm Cats Tongue. Very grippy - no more rotation. In fact, if I pick it up wrong I can't rotate it in my fingers, I have to put it down and pick it back up in the correct position. If I play for a long time, it will stick to my skin.

I have several, closer to Jazz III XL. If I can remember where I bought them, I'll grab you a few. Very good picks.

Re: ever use "Cool" brand picks

Oh neat-o! I still have some of the regular-sized ones here, but haven't ever seen smaller ones.
