Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

I'm sitting here looking at my PV C30, Zinky 2x12, Fender BF Dual Showman w/ 2x15 cab (that my pop-pop bought new in the 60's), modded pedals...
And I'm thinking about taking it all to the Arlington Guitar Show next weekend and getting rid of it all. Get what I can for it and then turn it into a dream amp like a Soldano or Mesa.

Ever think about that? Scrapping it all and starting from scratch?

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

That's pretty much what I did five years ago...not that I had particularly nice stuff at that point.

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

I'm tossing this idea around myself right now.

Except for me I'm thinking of taking a step back and getting rid of my 5150II for a small combo. :laugh2:

It's a disease!!!

So what did you get aleclee?

StratTom, I'll Trade you my Peavey Classic 30 and Zinky 2x12 cab for your 5150. :)

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

I did that several years ago.
I offloades my modular rack setup for a simple 112 combo.
Well it's a Mark IV so maybe not that simple.

From the sounds of things, if you're looking into a 5150 your C30 is definately not the right horsie for you.
I might hold off on ditching the Dual Showman, as you might want some killer cleans somewhere down the line.
Good luck and good hunting.

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

Thanks. I was mostly joking about the 5150. Mostly...

That Mark IV might be more to my liking. What's it like? I played on a few Mesas the other day, and really liked what I heard from the F series. I didn't care as much for the rectifier series, to bright and scratchy distortion, like the PV XXX. I'd like a versatile, low wattage combo or small head and small cab for recording and occasionally rocking out.

It would be real hard to let go of the Fender. I grew up playing through it. But it's been on my mind.

This and more. For details, check the link in my sig but I started with a PRS CE22 and a Koch Multitone.

I'll refer back to your first sentence. :smack:

Mark IV, What's it like. I find the cleans very nice, almost Fenderish. The Rhythm channel is my personal favorite light bluesey crunch. The lead channel is pretty hot, plenty of gain for my purposes, but then again I'm not a head banger anymore.
I found the Recto series the same as you did, a little too buzzy for my tastes.
As far as a small combo, or head the Mark IV will fit the bill, however at 85 watts on full power and 50-55 on Tweed mode, its pretty loud.
Good news, plenty of clean headroom, bad news is, it's kinda tough to get a decent tone and not be very loud indeed.
That's why i'm actually in the market for a bedroom amp myself.

I would play a TON of stuff before I offloaded anything personally. You never know, maybe one of them Blue Traynors might fit your bill and you wouldn't need to sell too much stuff to make that happen.

Sorry for the long response.
Good luck

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

Thank You for the long response! Based on your description, I think the wattage would be too much. I like to get those cruncy tones at bedroom level. Buzzy is the perfect word for the Rectifier. Where's the beef?!

I'm afraid I've developed some major gas for the Mesa F 30. I played on one the other day and it was just sweet. I'm sitting here thinking, I can get rid of the PV C30, Zinky cab, Keeley and Analogman DS-1s, Randall RG75, and have almost enough money to get one. I wonder what GC would do in a trade for all of that stuff. Could be better than the Ebay hassle. Hmmmmm....

:laugh2: I don't think I can give my 5150 up just yet.

The F30's sound really good. Try and go for the head/vertical cab.

As far as trading in at GC, I guess it depends how bad you want to get rid of your gear. I would think they wouldn't give you much of a deal since they are just taking it off your hands. If you don't want to sell on eBay, try a local shop and see if you can do a consignment. You can set your own price, only thing is they get a cut (in my experience anywhere from 10-15% of what it sold for).

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

I scraped all my amps a couple of years ago and started building my own. Haven't looked back.

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

I really prefer modeling amps for bedroom use. Doesn't matter if it's a Pod, V-amp, Line 6 combo, Boss GT series....something. They all provide very decent tones at low levels (or silent with headphones). All are very affordable also these days. A plus is the ease of recording, as all are usually plug and play into your digital recording medium.

Then have the amp that you like for gigging and when volume isn't an isssue...when the family is gone, ect.

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

I love the Dual Showmans from that era! Nowadays, everybody wants a 10-watt amp cause the big Fenders are too loud--but I've done gigs, daisy-chaining FOUR of these monsters together!

You might want to keep your eye out for a use Nomad 45, or a DC-3. Those will give a little more power and tonal flexibility--and they can hang with a drummer.

I understand the feeling about wanting to ditch everything, but I have so much great gear--I am truly very lucky and very blessed.

Good luck in your search.

Bill

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

Thanks for the replies, lots of great advice.

I've looked at those DCs as well, but haven't had a chance to sample one. Four Dual Showmans together??? That is INSANE. It's a beast! I've decided to hang on to the Fender. There's no need to get rid of that amp. It's a part of the family! I am convinced that I should get rid of all my other amps and dist pedals for one great amp, though. I'm going to hit GC today. I don't expect much, but it can't hurt to see. If that doesn't work, I'll post here, and finally, Ebay. It's time for a change!

Totally off subject, nothing really beats Mom's left over chicken n dumplins for breakfast on a rainy morning, ya know?

I've basically done that in the past year. The only thing I own now that I owned at this time last year is my Boss NS-2, my Vox 847 (although now its modded), my Schecter 006. I've completely changed my entire setup, and I'm still not even done yet. Hopefully by February I'll be done.

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

I need to get rid of my Ibanez gio (first guitar), epiphone G400 (second), my lame metal zone pedal. and some other junk

Re: Ever Wanted to Unload It All and Start Over?

Well, I spent a great deal of today in GC. I didn't take anything but my LP. I decided it's best to try a bunch of amps out and think about it for a while. Like someone said earlier in the post.

I played through many combos, and even some stacks. Man, that Marshall 2000 DSL sure sounds nice! Lots of tonal versatility. Didn't care as much for the DSL401. Some JCM 800s were cool, but I think they need to be cranked to really smoke. The Mesa F-series are pretty darn neat, but I couldn't really open them up to see what they sounded like cranked. Tried out a Dual Caliber 50+. Pepper from COC says this is his amp of choice and he gets a Master Of Puppets sound. I couldn't get there with the amp alone. He must have em modded or slams the front end with something. The B52 was a surprise. Pretty cool 1x12. Kinda in between Marshall and Mesa sound. The Fender Supersonic is the amp I would choose if I was playing nothing but blues. That amp smokes some blues!!!! A peavey Delta Blues sounded wimpy in comparison. I appreciate my Fender much more after today. It is beautiful. I found that the Mesas have a very groovy clean tone, as well. It's articulate, punctuated, woody and airy at the same time. Punchy without being overbearing.

Funny thing, when I was getting my PVC30 ready for trade/sell this morning, I changed out the JJ tubes and put the Groove Tubes back in. I plugged it in and strummed a few chords to make sure all was well. Amazing, my drive channel doesn't sound like a blanket is covering it anymore. MUCH more useable now. Anyone ever experience this with JJ tubes? I know Eurotubes has a strong reputation on the net, but I discovered that I don't care much for em in the PV.

I don't have much use for JJ 12AX7s. I have yet to find an amp where I like 'em better than anything else...or like 'em much at all for that matter.

Their EL34Ls sound good to me but I'm not so into that tone. As a result, I tend to run EH 6CA7s in my EL34 amps.
