Everything Axe Set Vs CR/VR/CR

Hey guys, help me out here

I've just bought a 93 Fender Strat, second hand. A few very minor dings, but otherwise, it's like new, but with a nice golden tint to the fretboard. It's alder, and it is a really light-toned axe, but I have only had light strings on so far, so it may be a bit more naturally well rounded tonally.

I've been looking at these two sets. My logic for the first set (JB Jr, Duckbuckers, Lil 59) is that I can get the full set for pretty cheap, and Seymour must regard them quite highly together. I always liked Duckbuckers, and I know the Lil 59s rock beyond all recognition (though tbh, I've only tried the bridge version), but I have been told repeatedly to stay away from the JB Jr.

My logic for the second set is, you can't go wrong with Cool Rails. I have only ever tried them in the neck position, where they excel. I have tried Hot Rails in the bridge, and yeah, they're nice, but a bit much for what I want, so I think another Cool Rails there would be good. The Vintage Rails serves the same purpose as the Duckbucker - unholy quackage.

I'll be playing mainly Classic Rock on this Strat. I really like my cleans, and I really like light distortion. I'll be playing this through a Marshall DSL 401 (cheers Kyuss Rock). Which set would be better for it? I'm open to other suggestions too.

Thanks in advance

Robbie

Re: Everything Axe Set Vs CR/VR/CR

I'm a big fan of the JB Jr., but it doesn't sound like the right thing for you. For your style and interests, the low to moderate output squished humbucker would rock in practically any combination. Even a trio of Cool Rails or Lil 59s would be awesome. A trio of Classic Stack Plusses would sound and look more Stratish but without the hum.

Re: Everything Axe Set Vs CR/VR/CR

I'm not too fussed about it looking Stratty. I think 3 squished humbuckers or (especially) 3 rails pickups look rather meaty. I have a 'proper' Strat that's for looking Stratish.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Any more opinions?

Re: Everything Axe Set Vs CR/VR/CR

the cr/vr/hr setup is pretty good for almost anything. ive never tried a cr in the bridge and neck of the same axe but i bet it would work out fine

Re: Everything Axe Set Vs CR/VR/CR

actually, I've been curious about the vintage rails for some time... If you end up trying them, I'd like to know how they sound

Re: Everything Axe Set Vs CR/VR/CR

I have the CR, HR, and VR in various guitars and positions. The HR does seem to be overkill, unless that is what you want.

The Cr is my favorite, but the Vr would be my next choice - I am really tempted on the Cr-Vr-Cr combo for an American Deluxe, but the SCN pups aren't too bad. I would almost do Vr-Vr-Vr if I wanted to maintain the truer strat vibe. They have more bite and snarl, but the Cr has a little more oomph with class.

Re: Everything Axe Set Vs CR/VR/CR

Yeah, CR, VR, CR. Have the option to throw the neck CR into parallel to get more of a single coil vibe. The VR is wired in parallel to begin with.
