So ya i keep hearing about these and how i should put one in my Mark IV Combo and how legendary those pseakers are... they're quite expensif, are they realy that good? how do they sound? clean, OD, high gain? and what can i listen to to get a good example of what their good for?

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

I used to use several EVM speakers, I have a 2x12 with EVM12L's and a 1x15 with an EVM15L...here is my take...thjey are LOUD as al get out and you'll get no real "speaker crunch" to speak of. You get out what you put in...they are pretty true/transparent speakers with a big, fat tight low end.

Zakk Wylde uses EVM12L's in his Marshall cabs, Carlos Santana used them for a long time and Joe Bonamassa uses them as well...there are more but those 3 come to mind right now.

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

Just to add in, they are heavy as sin (can't imagine Zakk's 4x12 cab) and incredibly high power handling, hence the 1x12" Mesa high wattage combo speaker choice.

If it makes anyone feel better, the EV12L's are still a bit cheaper than the Celestion Gold's !

* http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/products/alnico/detail.asp?ID=32

* http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Celestion-Alnico-Gold-Guitar-Speaker?sku=660022 - $325.00 USD per speaker !

. . . vs . . .

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/ElectroVoice-EVM12L-Black-Labe-Speaker?sku=302002 - $280.00 per speaker.

I do like the EV12L on looks way more than the Celestion though - does that count for anything ?

I actually have a 12L in a tuned bass 112 enclosure, and it makes and awesome low/med volume church rig. It also does great things on guitar. Mine is quite a bit older, way before they put Wylde's name on it. And they are certainly heavy as hell!

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

I have the original EVM12L in my IIC+ which is at this point about 25 years old. Sounds amazing and I couldn't imagine much else in there.

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

Neil Geraldo used them in Marshall combos back around the time of the second and third Pat Benetar albums. He inspired me to build a similar combo: JMP 2203 100-watt chassis in a 2-12 combo with a pair of EVM12Ls. That was one heavy amplifier. (I started with a 100-watt head and a 50-watt combo, then swapped the chassis. Loony-tunes, I was.)

I like the sound of the EV's, or rather tha lack of sound. Like TGWIF said, they put out what you put in.

With this combo, did you get 'any' speaker distortion at all ?

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

did they ever come stock in the JC-120? .. i seem to remember a guy who played around drexel circa 86-87 who had a jc-120 combo with a pair of them in it ... fell off the stage (about 3' high) in mccallister hall - landed corner first ... left a dent a half inch deep in the hardwood floors ... set it up right and it played like nothing had happened .. combo mustve weighed 100 lbs .. and it was solid state!

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

I don't think they were ever stock in the JC-120 - Roland just used no-name speakers - but it would be a good match. EV's are about the only way to make a JC-120 more JC-120 than it already is!

I have an old photo of me playing my Dean V through the monster-mutt-Marshall-mega combo at the Redeye Tavern, near Media.

I doubt it. Of course, I was young and stoopid, and probably couldn't tell speaker distortion from any other kind of distortion. I think I liked them for for their extended flat EQ, rather than their lack of distortion. To this day, I prefer clean, flat speakers. I have a G12H80 (very similar to a Classsic Lead 80) in my 18 Watter clone; a totally bizarre speaker choice in an 18 Watter by most standards, but I like it.

When that combo was eventually stolen, I replaced it with a JCM800 2203 head with a Marshall 2x12 cab, again with EVM12Ls. Still heavy, but at least it came in two pieces.

Oh my, these speakers rule at focused power.

You might like them, or hate them. The tone is clear from top to bottom. I think they rule from low volumes, to top volumes...and other drivers fold/dry up/blow away.

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

I kinda liked them in high power combos (bigger Music Mans, Twins, etc), but they are a little dark and the rig gets stupid heavy. I have a 15L that is killer for some things, but an Altec 15" works just as well with less weight.

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

I had one in my Mark III combo. Never liked it.

what didnt you like about it?

im mainly using this amp for metal and high gain rockin tones, the huge bottom end and tightness i hear these get sounds interesting to me for this

Well, they are SS amps, so i would expect that it would be OK after a 3ft drop.

It is toob amps that are fragile as hell . . . but maybe not :

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

I used the 80s model 1x12 exclusively for 25 years with an original Mark1 and it could match Marshall 4x12s with no real issue. I gave my Boogie to my son last year ... built a new D'Lite 22w/33w amp last year. Found it a little hard to get live volumes with the G1265. Loaded one of the EVM12L reissues and the extra 3db efficiency got me where I needed to be.

If you have an amp that you want to get OD from the amp (like my Boogie or D'Lite) the EVM12L can really fit the bill. It's balanced across the range and can be really clean and crisp ... nice bottom.

While I run the new EVM in an open back and the old EVM lives in a sealed cab, I can sit them side by side. They are pretty much the same speaker from my point of view. Both needed some breaking in at first.

BTW, no need to spend more than $200 bucks for one ... I bought mine for about $190.

Re: EVM12L, Whats so legendary about them?

One of the 2 speaker whic can handle so much power ,stay clean ,tight yet very musical and smooth on the top. The other is Eminence Delta Pro 12A.
If you are after a tight rock/metal sound ,and your amp has the gain sound you want ,tahn it's the right thing.
If you need speaker saturation ,you would need a 400w amp to drive it there LOL. They handle 300 watts.
Heavy as a dead horse ,but the sound is worth it. The only Celestion comes close to the "flat" and tight feeling is the G100K ,but you will feel the price difference.and your back too LOL!

dark?

Mine (the new one) is quite bright and lively, especially compared to Eminence Delta pro 12A.
