Evos In My PRS: Not Too Impressed...

I replaced the Dragon II PRS pickups in my CE22 MT with an Evo set.

They sound fair, but I am not impressed. There is just too much fuzziness. A prime characteristic of the Evos, in my PRS anyway, is a certain low end fizzle; all of the notes run together in one buzzy slur -- leaving no room for definition or expression. I've decided that it's time for some experimenting.

I've already decided that the neck pickup will be an Air Norton. That is the lead tone I am looking for.

But as for the bridge, I am not sure. I absolutely love the fat, vintage yet modern voice of my TB-5 Custom. It's currently installed in an alder bodied MIM Strat, and I can't help but wonder if it would gel with my PRS.

What do you guys think? I'm sort of afraid that it might be too chunky -- that the mahogany body/maple top would fatten up the Custom too much. The search feature did not present much, so I've resorted to posting a new thread.

Thanks,

The Evos were too fizzy and lacked definition? Are you serious? I can understand the fizzyness, you need to turn down the treble control on your amp and probably the gain because they are high output pickups and with the same settings you'll be getting a lot more high end distortion. The lacking definition comment is a little bit disturbing, I just installed one in the bridge of my basswood Ibanez the other day, and if I had to describe the pickup in one word it would be tight. I'm not saying that with a little tweaking of your setup that you're bound to like them because theyre definitely not for everyone, I'm just pointing out that from your complaints it sounds like you need to do a little more work still before you can fairly judge them, the notes should not run together in to a buzzy slur, this pickup shreds.

I have two sets of EVO's and I had to re-pott both of them. After I potted them they were clear and edgy.

Maybe your running too much gain cause EVO's are the most defined pups Ive ever used. I think PRS should only be used for organic tones, not that the EVO doesnt balance in it, I just think such fine cuts of wood should be reserved for more organic humbuckers.

Rah, no offense, but that logic is just... meh. Put whatever pickups you want in that thing; I'd have EMG's in it in a heartbeat.

That´s my same thought..what about the Pearly Gates?

I´d try Duncans out.

Any reason you swapped out the DII's in the first place? They're killer pups IMO.

Yeah the DRAGONS rock!

hmmmmm you know the EVOS are sorta the same vibe as a Custom 5 only hotter.

If you like the Air Norton, which will sound ULTRA FAT in your PRS, then you might want to go Air Zone. Maybe even a Breed or Breed neck (though you will not be able to use the Breed NEck with the AN)

Maybe you should try a breed set OR stick with the CUSTOM since you LIKE it and try a SD 59 neck or a high output Duncan neck.

I'm just testing the guitar's bounds. I really like the Dragon IIs, and may reinstall them just to contrast, but I think demand something hotter.

I've since done some major tweaking to the POD. I'm starting to discover the tones that I have been looking for. Most of my high gain presets were created specifically for the Strat, and I didn't make any initial modifications to run the PRS. However, after much trial and error I think I may have found what I've been after -- but this isn't to discourage me from experimenting.

Well I may do a magnet swap on my evo in a few weeks just out of curiosity, so I'll be sure to post a thread about it when it gets done.

Please do.

I've always, ALWAYS wondered what my Evo would sound like with an Alnico 5 magnet. As it stands now, the pickup is almost TOO tight and edgy. Although I still dig it in my hardtail.

You've gotta watch your presence knob with that pickup, and the treble too. It's fun once you get it dialed in. It's in my "stunt" guitar.

It is a fun thing to play around with in a backup guitar because its so easy to get a unique but still useable sound. I doubt it will ever make it in to my main guitar though. I don't know what magnet I'll put in it, I have (what I believe is) an A5 from an Ibanez Infinity pickup, though I'm not totally sure, and I have an A2 from my custom custom which I want to put a ceramic in soon to try out. I'll probably go with the A5. Anyone know if thats really whats in my Ibanez INF bridge pickup? (the neck one is ceramic)
