Experiment with JB polepieces

I tried a JB open coil in the bridge of a Hagstrom f20 t.
The Hagstroms in general are quite a bargain.
And readily available second hand.
The wood tends to be high quality and the necks superb.
The pickups themselves are actually pretty good.
I raised the polepieces on the bridge stock pickup.

For a change of pace I tried the JB.
It was originally on a Jackson soloist.
First impression was it delivers a lot of highs and mids.
A Van Haleny kind of sound.
Basically a mid boost.
Similar effect can be obtained by turning up the mids on your amp.

The polepieces were pretty much flush with the top which is usually the case on open coils.
So what happens if I raise the polepieces 4 or 5 turns?
Yes the sound becomes fatter and less highs.
Similar to the original pickup where I did the same thing.
The pickup itself is lower so raising the polepieces is amplifying the sound from that lower position.
What do you guys think?
The pickup polepieces in both cases are roughly 1/8 from the bottom strings.
Necks are about 1/16.

Now here's a thought:
if you place a cover on an open coil is the slight change in sound more due to the slightly lower pickup position because you would probably turn the pieces to at least lineup with the pickup cover holes?
in so doing you lose a bit of the highs?
