Explorer help?

Been GASsing pretty hard for an explorer lately. I'm not loyal to any one brand or guitar maker so up in the air as into what I should be looking at. A true blue Gibson is out of the question. I have, however, been looking at Epiphones and the LTD Ex line. I'd like to keep the switch down on the bottom like the 84 setup has. Is there anything else I should be looking at? Jackson/Washburn/Schecter etc?

Re: Explorer help?

Check Ebay for Edwards EX series (ESP subsidiary, Japanese market).

That would be a great choice! The have models like brand G with that layout and also have some sharper horned models with diff configs..

Re: Explorer help?

The Edwards guitars are very nice, never played one but it's on my bucket list! Havn't seen one under $600 and good luck finding one with an ebony fretboard.

Re: Explorer help?

i just scored an epi '58 korina explorer with swank upgrades for $300 off the local CL

i am loving this thing to death. the fat neck is surprisingly easy to play. i think i would have been left wanting if i had gone the ltd route, just because the shape isn't exactly explorer-like.

Re: Explorer help?

Nice score man! The profile differences between LTD and Gib/Epi or any of the others aren't as big of a deal as the pickup switch location and fretboard for me. May have to dig for an older White Gibson with the ebony, seems that's all I am finding.

Re: Explorer help?

I paid $600 for my white 2006 Gibson Explorer, which was about 6 years old at the time. They are not very valuable guitars on the used market. I would just wait till a nice one pops up locally.

Hint: If you buy a white one, you get an ebony fretboard for no extra cost.

Re: Explorer help?

Chapman Ghost Fret is another option, even though it has the switch on the horn.

Re: Explorer help?

Jackson Kelly models have 24 frets, just about all the rest have 22 frets. (If that's a consideration.)

Re: Explorer help?

Used Gibson explorers have a wide price range. The more metal looking ones in black and especially the whites ones with ebony board are expensive.

The clear brown mahogany ones - not so much.

Re: Explorer help?

Id second that chapman. Mostly because Ive super curious about his guitars. Chappers seems to have built a very nice guitar at a very reasonable price.
