Explorer sounds weird - wiring?

Hi Guys!

I have a problem and can't figure it out myself. I bought a 2nd hand explorer and it still is how I got it. The pickups are 496R and 500T, but the bridge position doesn't sound right, the neck position does.

I took it to our practice space and when I played with gain and our usual volume, the bridge pickup had massive feedback which I never experienced with any guitar, plugging it in at home today I realized that it sounds "thin" (very bright and a lot less output) , especially when switched from the neck to the bridge, the neck is nice and fat and the bridge sounds unreasonably thin. I checked with gibsons 4 conductor color scheme and it does not look like its messed up and wired with the coil splitted all the time, the white and green connector are taped up but I didn't look since it would probably make no sound if they aren't connected, or am I wrong?

I tried my best to take pictures of the wiring, I appreciate your help greatly! I'm just clueless right now and I really like that guitar, just sounds odd.
(the bridge measured about 13,8k ohms DCR which is quite considerably lower than my other explorer 500T which is 15,4k)

cheers!

Re: Explorer sounds weird - wiring?

How come the cables are grey plastic?

Anyway, the way to test is to disconnect the hot lead of the bridge pickup at the potentiometer (hot only, no need to disconnect mass for now). Then use some crocodile clips to direct connect the pickup to the cable to the amp and see whether that sounds right.

Re: Explorer sounds weird - wiring?

Looking a bit closer at the pictures it seems obvious that the bridge pickup has been replaced and soldered on a bit rough. Neck pickup looks original.

Testing procedure is the same.

Re: Explorer sounds weird - wiring?

What does it say on the back of the bridge pickup? Is it a true Gibson or was it replaced? I don't remember any modern Gibson pickups being that squeal-y.

Re: Explorer sounds weird - wiring?

I have had a bunch of explorers and one I had in the 90s had a similar problem. Very thin sounding. Wound up selling it.
