EZdrummer2 launches today

Re: EZdrummer2 launches today

I've seen some of the videos that Toontrack have put out there and I do rather like the way it comes together as a package. They've got a really good reputation for sample creation too.

They do, indeed. I'm not a fan of the EZ Bake Oven approach to mixing, but the drums look intriguing. But I am using Steve Slate drums now and really like it.

Re: EZdrummer2 launches today

slight hijack, but is EZdrummer fairly easy for pianorolling drum sections? I still haven't found a comfortable, easy, cheap and lightweight MIDI sequencer/piano roll and I'm getting a little frustrated about it. I'm tempted to buy an old Mac so I can have Garageband.

Re: EZdrummer2 launches today

Don't go too far back into Mac history. The earlier OS iterations can not support the latest GB with its paired-down version of the Drummer feature.

Re: EZdrummer2 launches today

Ez drummer 2 has a cool feature that finds beats for you based on tapping a pattern that sounds like what you want. That's neat and all, but I used Superior drummer for a long time and it really is a cookie-cutter approach. The new drummer feature in logic pro x however, will actually analyze your other tracks and create beats appropriate for them with apparently surprising accuracy. It also has great features for seamless time-sig changes and letting you adjust the complexity and what parts of the drums are getting played. I actually got an mpc studio fairly recently though, and I have to say, that's WAY more fun than mouse clicking :P

Re: EZdrummer2 launches today

This sort of product is excellent for beginning demos and/or guide tracks. In the longer term, however, the pick 'n' mix menu approach could lead to sterility and disappointment. Expect to have to perform some editing or fine tuning to get a less machine-like track.

It should be pointed out that the Apple Logic Drummer "follow" feature can only attempt to lock in to one other track at a time. This could be the bass line for one eight bar Pattern and then the vocals for another section. This may not be detailed enough for power users. The "follow" feature DOES NOT put the automatic Drummer into perfect synchronisation with wayward strumming.

Any SDUGF Soundcloud subscribers can find numerous examples of human time-keeping artefacts by directing their attention to a bunch of three tracks posted in March by Dominic Murcott under the aegis of The No Orchestra.

Re: EZdrummer2 launches today

i m complete slouch when it comes drum programming, even with eZDrummer. but this video from Ola has raised my hopes to an all time high. hopefully it is what they say it is

Re: EZdrummer2 launches today

One thing I'd like is a nice internal midi editor - I need to watch the tutorials still, but some screen shots sort of look like it has that.

Hmmm - after watching, it might be useful, but kind of hard to tell if I'd like what it generates or not. It's pretty easy already to grab a line of ride hits and move it around in a midi editor to change the power hand or whatnot. What I'd need to see is getting to a part where you use a midi drum pad device and how it'd take what you play and generate useful beats and fills.

Honestly, as a garageband enthusiast the Drummer feature is very good for demoing. I wouldn't use it to replace a drummer on a fully produced release however.

EZDrummer 1 has better sound quality and if im not mistaken you can humanise the tones quite a bit.

Re: EZdrummer2 launches today

The Drummer "instrument" in the latest revision of Garage Band is very much pared down compared to the full version as it appears in Logic Pro X. LPX features tuneable drums, more "personalities" and/or styles.

Think of Drummer as a construction kit of MIDI Note data templates. At the superficial level, it is great for laying down guide tracks. As your project develops, so should the percussive parts develop.

If you were working with a human drummer, you would expect to give instruction as to the required feel(s) through the composition and where you want any fills. The artificial intelligence drummer requires similar instruction. You have to edit the MIDI Notes.

EZD2 is deffy on my list of the next must-haves.

Plastic Mickey Mice have been selling quite well for years and the efficiency of this one is priceless when it comes to songwriting or beefing up / fixing f'd up drumtracks :) If you wish to burn 10x the money to get some mediocre sound or 100x the money and dosens of hours in a high profile studio with top gear to get better and more personal result - I can only agree to do it.

As someone who swears by live drums on professional recordings, live drums are not easy to record and process.

When you have an idea for a song, you want to get it out efficiently and with time, the technology has become available to create better sounding demos and ideas so now we can sketch out drafts within minutes and almost approach the professional studio sound!

This is a great thing, finally we can really know how our songs are going to sound before we hit the studio. There is no need to be closed minded to the applications of a good sounding drum program. Soul transcends recording techniques, hardware, software and exists deep within the root of the source. How that is executed has little impact.
