Fattening a single coil? The Fat Boost?

Is there a stompbox that will "fatten" the single coils in my Tele? I'd like to obtain a warm, rich, full sound for certain leads. I don't like the loss of bass response in some of the OD's I've tried. The Fulltone Fat Boost is grabbing my attention-anyone try it with single coils/own it? Other recommendations?

Thanks,
D

My favorite way to fatten the tone of a Tele is to use flat pole pickups and move them as close as possible to the strings...but not so close that the magnetic polepieces start to pull the strings out of tune. The bridge pickup can be moved closer to the strings than the neck pickup...the neck pickup will pull the strings out of tune more easily because the strings move more over the neck pickup. I use a Boss DS-1 alot with my Tele. I set all the controls to the 12 noon position to start and tweak from there. I can leave the DS-1 on ALL the time and go from clean to overdrive by using the volume control on my Tele. Turn it down to less than 1/2 way and it cleans right up...turn it up and the Tele starts to scream. Gets a great tone through my vintage Fender amps. But the secret is to find a setting on the DS-1 that lets me leave it on all the time and not be turning it off and on when I want to go from clean to distorted. That's the way Vai and Satriani use the DS-1. The Duncan Pickup Booster gets rave reviews too...but I haven't tried one yet. Lew

Ok-I've heard you speak highly of that box, Lew- I really like where the pickup is at height-wise. I picked up a SD-1 (Super OD) and I'm a bit unhappy with the loss of Bass response even with the tone all the way down. Does the DS-1 (Distortion) bleed out the lows in your opinion, or is it pretty true to the guitar/amps eq?

I recently picked up a fat boost. I haven't experimented with it on a single coil pup, but I can.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

The SD Pickup Booster should fatten it up as well.

I usually play without effects, but I like the Made in Japan DS-1's alot and one reason I sold my Keeley modded DS-1 and kept the stock one is that the lows sounded alot more natural with the unmodded MIJ Boss DS-1. Also, the clean tones were better and not so grainy...I use the DS-1 for both clean and distorted tones. If I'm going to use it, I set it up so I can leave it on all the time and just use my guitar's volume control to do it all.

The Duncan Pickup Booster is worth looking into too...tho I have not heard one.

A Bad Bob Booster might do the trick for you too. A few guys on the www.tdpri.com board seem to be digging it for exactly the same purpose you describe. If you check out the pedal section of the forum there are a couple threads on it.
