What are the beefiest, fattest single coils you guys have ever used? From Duncan or any other brand...

Re: Fatty Beef Pickups

Fralin Steel Pole 43's...sound like P90's.

Strat singles. I'm like the p90 sound but i wanna keep this as stratty as possible.

Re: Fatty Beef Pickups

G&L MFD singles from the S-500, Tom Anderson has some fat ones, I have one guitar with a 1/4lb in the neck and it's a little too fat. I wish it were the tapped one, but then I wound my own 1/4lb tapped for another guitar, so I have both now. I like the Dimarzio Rails, like the Cruiser and Fast Track when you have to go beyond normal single coil output levels. In the same 1/4" magnet realm, I have an '83 Ibanez Roadstar strat that has three 1/4" singles but it's with ceramic magnets and steel poles. They are pretty fat and juicy. The Duncan Custom Staggered/Flat is a great pickup, too.

You have to narrow down what you mean by fat, though. Basically you have to decide how much of the strat's clicky attack and crisp, glassy treble you want to retain. You retain the most IMO with the G&L or the rails, while the 1/4" magnets and/or dramatically overwound single will produce more subdued highs, and a smoother attack.

I'd like it to be glassy and crisp on the top but somewhat subdued compared to the big beefy clangy bass and thick mids im looking for. Kind of like a Texas Special but a weeeee bit smoother and thicker.

Re: Fatty Beef Pickups

I had a Custom Shop strat bridge pickup that was alnico II magnets, staggered and was wound to a full 10k...twas a beast of a pickup no doubt!

Re: Fatty Beef Pickups

Hot Rails.

:smack: I'm not much on single coils.

Is that the one Luke has now? That thing is mean.

Re: Fatty Beef Pickups

Here are a few for your perusal:

Jason Lollars "Specials" do a great job of bridging the gap betwen vintage tone and fatter, girthier P-90 tones. Perhaps my all time favs.

Steve Kerstings S-90 strat pups and his T-90 tele bridge pup are killer pups. Great, great tone......

I also like Duncans 1/4 lb'rs. I've used the start and tele 1/4lb'rs at various times over the last 20 years or so. Great tone and feel imho.

Dave Stephens Texas Twister strat pickups are another great sounding, fat set. Not as beefy as the 1/4lb's, but oh so toneful.

Harmonic Designs S-90's are the fav's of many a fine player.

Re: Fatty Beef Pickups

A staggered Quarter Pounder from from Duncan, although it was very P90-ish. Other than that, my own home-made single coils are huge sounding and about to get huge-er since I just got some wider rod magnets in, some .197" Alnico 2 and some 1/4" Alnico 5.

Re: Fatty Beef Pickups

The CS one I got from Christian is what you are describing, but the top end isn't really "crisp" like say a surfer or SSL1. It's more rounded.

You could go for a a 5/2 custom bridge. That's the only one in the regular line I can really think of.

Re: Fatty Beef Pickups

I like the DiMarzio FS-1. It fattens up the Strat bridge position nicely without losing the essential Strattiness. Great pickup!

Some players find the traditional Strat® bridge pickup sound clear and sparkling, while others think it's almost painfully bright. You know who you are, and the FS-1™ is for you. It's louder (about 25% more power) than a stock single-coil, and smoother and fatter-sounding all 'round. When you combine the FS-1™ in the bridge with Class of '55s™ or Blue Velvet™ in the middle and neck, you'll have a guitar with calibrated, balanced tone in all five switch positions. For a bigger, more aggressive sound all around, you can also install FS-1™ pickups in all three positions.
Recommended For: All positions, or bridge position with standard single-coils in neck and middle.
Tech Talk: We didn't design the FS-1™ with a vintage sound in mind, but if you're trying to get a blues sound from the bridge position of a maple-neck Strat, you'll be very happy with the extra mids and bass, and the sound still cleans up when the volume is rolled down.
