Faulty Custom 5?

Hello! New here, so please bear with me.

I have a custom 5 bridge pickup that I have (love it) had for no less than 3 months and it has suddenly quit on me. I checked the wiring diagrams on this site, re-wired everything in my les paul (the typical les paul 2,2,2,3way setup), and it still does not work.

It is the black wire or 'hot output' wire that is not responding, or has very litte volume, and the pot is fine because when i introduce the red wire (one of the coils) it works fine with a bit of hum.

I have not tampered with this pickup otherwise...well, i really can't because it has a nickel cover over it.

Has this ever happened to anyone before? Will SD let me exchange faulty products?

Re: Faulty Custom 5?

sounds like one of the coils is dead. If it is still under warrenty and you have the original receipt SD will be honorable.

But I dont think your in the green there.

Re: Faulty Custom 5?

Just to be sure unhook the pickup and use an ohmeter to check each coil. If you get a short (0 ohm) or a an abnormally high reading from one of the coils then it is faulty. If the coils read correctly (around 7K each, 14K total) then the pickup is OK and you need to check elsewhere for the problem.

Re: Faulty Custom 5?

Good news! SD will take it back! I guess they stand by their name afterall.

Yeah, I found out that one of the coils is really dead, the green wire has no response either, and i know that is either the start or finish of one of the coils - it's related to the black wire.
