Faulty Volume Pot

Hi all,

I just wired up my strat with a set of SD hot rails and I love everything about it except for one rather big problem: the volume pot. When I turn down my volume to 0, the guitar is silent as it should be, but if I do so much as tap my finger on the knob, the volume will come back. I can't turn it down more because it's already at 0, but if I twist it even further down it will be silent until I release my finger, so it won't stay down. Basically, the only way I know how to solve this problem is to turn the volume back up and then back down again and hope that it stays silent.

I was contemplating just taking it into the local shop to get it solved, but I've had faulty pots before and I'll probably have more in the future (or at least until my wiring gets better haha), so I figure I should try and learn about it. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Many thanks in advance!

Re: Faulty Volume Pot

id pull it open and check the wiring. could be a weak solder joint. hit everything with a hot iron to reflow the solder then check again.

CORRECTION:

I just realized the order of the taper is more like 0, 10, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 which is a little different from what I thought the problem was, I don't know if that changes anything in terms of solving the problem but I thought I'd put it out there.

Thanks

Re: Faulty Volume Pot

with your correction, it could very well be a bad pot. ive seem that when someone over heated the pot soldering the ground to the case. still worth checking the wiring since its free and easy

Re: Faulty Volume Pot

I have a feeling that's what it is, I had plenty of trouble trying to heat up the solder joint on the pot and I wondered if I overheated the pot in the process because it took me quite some time. Thanks again
