Re: Favorite Gibson model?

I love the sound of a good Les Paul, but I can never gel with their ergonomics, especially playing live.

I'm happier with a nice, well-balanced SG. Better upper fret access, and the slightly lighter weight agrees with me.

I also like 339s. :D

Re: Favorite Gibson model?

Lifeson LP would be my first Gibson choice.
For looks/vibe I like the explorers.

Re: Favorite Gibson model?

SG! It has a weird stifled sound to it I think caused by the body shape. I'm not sure how to explain what I mean. I'd love to have one but then I'd want to refret it to an 11" radius. I'd have to step it up and do a really good job.

Re: Favorite Gibson model?

Never owned a "real" one but the Explorer is my favorite Gibber design.

Re: Favorite Gibson model?

I had a reverse Flying V from 2007. It was an excellent guitar, a lot easier to balance on one's leg than it would seem, but I came into some money issues around 2012. Being so rare, I couldn't bare to sell it to some stranger who would get their greasy hands all over it.

So I sold it to the owner of a bar I frequently perform at, it's one of those places where they collect cool things to hang on the wall.

Long story short, I now have a guitar to point me to my table.

The Nighthawk is a close second though, but maybe only based on cool points. It's got excellent versatility for a guitar that was probably invented to clear the "miscellaneous pickups" warehouse at Gibson.

One last side note, you forget the Moderne and Futura. Not sure the Moderne counts because it was never put onto production. And because you slipped up and gave me the chance to lecture on both the Moderne and reverse Flying V, here's your punishment:

I love the look of a Les Paul, but just don't like playing them. I prefer ES or SG, and if I had to choose just one it would be the SG. They just flat-out rock. No other way to explain it.

Re: Favorite Gibson model?

I think the Les Paul is the most aesthetically pleasing, but the Explorer is my favorite to play.

Re: Favorite Gibson model?

I went with ES but it was a tough call vs. the Les Paul. ES's are a little more versatile, sound better clean. Ask me in a week, and I might reverse that decision.

By body shape you mean thickness? They indeed have their own tone, I definitely say SG too.

Re: Favorite Gibson model?

Les Pauls. I gradually came to the realization that most of my favorite guitar players were Brits, and they played Gibsons, Les Pauls most often. Always loved the full, heavy tones. The more I played them, the more I appreciated the genius involved in the design. All of the elements come together in a unique way. If you look at the range of models that fall under that: Std, Custom, Studio, Special Jr, Deluxe, Double Cutaway, etc and the PU's (HB's, mini-HB's, P-90's) it's an incredibly versatile line.

Runner ups for me are 335's, SG's, and Flying V's. Needless to say, I have a great admiration for Ted McCarty.

Re: Favorite Gibson model?

My favorite is the original Howard Roberts Fusion of the mid 80s. I think Alex Lifeson used one during Moving Pictures, and it was a great combo of an LP and 335. The later model ones weren't as nice, with the balsa wood center block and the gold hardware.

Re: Favorite Gibson model?

Not possible to answer, Between all the Iconic Gibsons-the LP,SG,335,V,Explorer, and various Jazz Guitars, it would be like asking a devoted mother which of her children she loves best. That said, the Les Paul is th firstborn.

The contours of the broad hips to small waist and then small shoulders and horns I think is somehow awkward to the shaping of the overall sound but ends up sounding cool.
