Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

Only had this set of Seth Lovers for about a week installed in a G&L ASAT Deluxe and they have quickly risen to the top of my list of favorite HH set up.

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

I really just prefer a H H setup.
The middle pickup seems to get in the way more than anything.
I’d also love an H-S setup.

Don’t get me wrong, I have a Strat and I do play it. But I have the middle pickup a little lower than the others.

H-H in Triple Shots.

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

Went with H-H but almost went with S-S-S (really love those 2 and 4 positions with a good Strat set.)

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

HS.

I really love the neck in single coil and rarely use the middle pickup.

Nice options you have there!

My current go to that really cover all of my needs:

Warmoth Tele Roasted Swamp Ash Body+Roasted QS Maple Neck - Bill Lawrence L45S and L48TL (S-S but really H-H)
Fender Strat Alder Body+Rosewood Neck - Fat 50s (with added 7 way switch to add N+B and N+M+B to the normal 5 way Strat)

The Strat is slightly noisy but still gets such a nice bell-like tones you want from a Strat. The Tele is the most versatile guitar I've built–made me a huge Bill Lawrence fan. I can go from Country to Metal with that guitar. Super clean and articulate no matter how much gain you add.

Honorable Mentions:

Warmoth Strat Basswood Body+Roased QS Maple Neck with Rosewood Board - SD Screamin Demon in the bridge, SD Lil Screamin Demon in the middle and DMZ Liquifire in the neck
Musikraft Strat Walnut Body+Mahogany Neck with Rosewood Board (Gibson Scale) - SD Dimebucker in the bridge and SD Screamin Demon in the neck

Both of these are really cool combos that can cover a lot of ground...the Dimebucker is such a misunderstood/undermarketed pickup.

Kinda surprised so many like the H S thought about using that in the poll but didn't think there were enough who like it. Rather eye opening there!

I've thought about building one based off of a Wayne Charvel Monster I played once...but it was really an H-H as it was loaded with a JB and Lil JB. If I went with a H-S it would be H-H.

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

Started out way back when with a H-H Westone Thunder 1A and mostly had H-H since.
Only recently acquired a Charvel Fusion Custom H-S-S and still training myself to not drag the plectrum straight through the middle p/u. This can only be good for technique!
I do prefer H-H with some inventive switching to get a pleasing range of tones.

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

HH is my favorite. I could happily do every gig ever with that.

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

I see you are asking for your favorite pickup sets as well, heres mine for each category:

HSS- Brobucker/SSL-1m/StraBro-90
HSH- El Diablo bridge/5-2 Strat/Screamin Demon
HH-59/C bridge, Sentient neck
SSS- STK-S6b/STK-S4m/STK-S7n
HS- Black Winter bridge/ YJM Neck

Right there with you. I had to vote HH, but I also love a good SSS. But that doesn't mean I hate the others. But of course, the answer is to have several of each. :D

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

HSH. Pretty much does everything, especially with splits. I prefer to have only a few guitars that I love than bounce between a bunch of guitars. A lot less maintenance too.

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

HSS. I really dislike PAF-style neck humbuckers most of the time; neck singles sound amazing.

And why not get the Strat/between tones as well? HSS for sure.

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

1H or HS is my favorite. Though, I do really dig my G&L Legay HSS with Lil Screamin Demon and two Quarter Pounds.

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

Pickup choice for HSH and HSS can be hard to sort out. Single coils and humbuckers often require different value control pots and not all humbuckers work well when split.

HSH is good if it can be made to work with a super switch and custom wiring. I also like HSS with a full size bridge humbucker and a pair of rails style pickups - Its actually an HHH setup.

Re: Favorite multi pickup set up?

I said HSH, but I’ll add that most of my guitars are actually HH and I really dig all three positions (yes... center too). My two HSH guitars are set up to give me neck+bridge in the center switch position and work in the center pickup in some other way.

One (actually an HHH since the center p’up is a rail) uses a 3-way toggle for the humbuckers and a blend pot to move from humbuckers only, to adding the center, to center only. Gives me all seven combos.

The other (true HSH) uses a 5-way switch for standard options except for having neck+bridge in the center. I use a push/pull to switch to center only no matter what position the 5-way is in. Gives me 6 of the 7 possible combos (only one missing is neck+center+bridge).

I also have a couple of SS guitars (2 P-90s), a SSS Strat, and projects for an H, another SSS, another HH (or SS... haven’t made up my mind yet), and another HSH.

I like HSH best, but I also like the variety of having different setups available and can make any of them do whatever I need. I only take two (sometimes 3 if my 10-string is needed) to any given gig and I rotate between them.
