in my rack days I ran a Marshall 9200 power amp, a Marshall JMP-1 pre-amp, and an ADA MP-1 pre-amp...I liked it pretty well...the pre-amps got stolen so I just hung the rack thing up and sold everything else at a time when I was not working...I prefer vintage amps anyway, but at the time the music called for it so I had it...

Peavey Rockmaster - three channel tube preamp
Peavey Profex II for effects
Hafler power amp
Ran the Rockmaster in the loop for the Profex. The FX loop was a moveable part of the effects chain so CM-FX-RV would be compressor, Rockmaster, reverb. Very cool and flexible setup, I wish they made stuff like that today. With some new tubes in the preamp, I'ld still have good fun with it.

the mesa tri axis for preamp and a mesa power amp sized to suit your needs
tc electronics multi effects (what's it called ? G major?)
lexicon reverb
tuner and power conditioner to taste
back in the day, it wouldve been the ada mp1 and matched ada power amp ... ruled the 80's HR/HM scene ...
for me, it's the poor mans version ..

i'm actually considering getting out of the rack game and into the tube amp world ... maybe a fuchs, maybe a dr z , maybe a boogie ... maybe some others i havent even tried yet ... but i will miss the gazillion presets and versatility of the rack world

I LOVE that preamp!!
I was going to buy one, but the rep for VHT never returned my phone calls :evil: , so, I went with Engl, based simply on their (superior) customer service.

For metal:
Marshall JMP-1 preamp
Marshall VS 120/120 Pro (SS 2nd generation valvestate, 120 watts/120 watts)
Marshall 1960A 4X12 with Celestion Vintage 30's
this setup will rip your face off and will reach the 130+ dB range.

I still have the Rockmod which I used pumped into 2 Atomic Amps these days. It still rips! VHT was just recently sold after 15 years.

I'll pretend there's no price limit, and go for the best.
Track down an expensive discontinued Bogner Fish (like the ones in the Jerry Cantrell's gear thread).
Mesa 2:100 or anything by VHT.

Furman PL8+ power conditioner
Vented blank space to ventilate the power amp.
8 Space rack, so you don't kill yourself with a bigger one.

2 Bogner 4-12's with mix of Vin 30 and G12H30's.
