Favorite Tele Pickups for Classic Rock

Re: Favorite Tele Pickups for Classic Rock

I had to add that I love the FENDER CUSTOM SHOP 50s and NOCASTER models. Though they get Microhpnic at extreme volumes and gain, they are killer bitey classic tone. they roll back well on the tone, and they are harmonically rich.

Muy Grande, Fender TX specials had them extra uppermids. I cannot take it in a tele lead pickup.

Duncan Broadcaster is a great pickup. So is JD. Because that my tele has a hardash body and maple neck (it sounds great by the way is not shrill or anything) JD worked out very good so far. Better than the broadcaster on the non-wound strings. JD might sound too smooth for hardcore tele players especially in dark guitars. A2p is clearer but since I also use my tele for semi overdriven stuff in my case JD worked better.

Fralin Blues Sp. on the other hand, is again a very good pickup, and, I think, has more balls than the Broadcaster and the JD (and of course the a2p). Me thinks that it is a great classic rock pickup. I would say the best among the ones I have tried. Yet, still my first choice is a JD. It is LESS clear than a JD, sounds brighter on the non-wound strings, but darker on the wound ones. Rolling off the tone give a very nice 57LP kinda tone. JD, too, is not that bad in that regard.

I have a torres tele blues special staggered lead. 7.50K or so. I really like that pickup. Got it quite cheap. It is quite a good pickup that sounds similar to a fralin blues sp. Still I prefer the JD on my tele. :smokin:

I love my JD. Indeed, I recently bought another one for future use.

On the other hand, some time ago I installed a Phat Cat bridge into my 95LPSTD. I loved the results. Thus, am not using my tele for overdriven tones that much anymore. That's why I kept looking around for a pickup that sounds like a JD BUT has more clarity, and more of that twang. I am not saying that JD is not clear or JD does not have any twang. No! It is a very good pickup for sure. Anyways, this curiousity of mine lead me to Hamel's. 4 or 5 days ago I received 2 Hamel tele leads in the mail: STD-A (the blackguard tele lead) and the STD-B (broadcaster tele lead). Did not do the installation yet, but will be doing it asap. JD for sure is serious competition for them Hamels too, still I hope I did not waste my money. :)

Call me crazy, but the Dimarzio VV Hot T and VV neck do an excellent job on classic rock and blues stuff. No noise to boot.

I currently use the virtual T and virtual T neck in my Tele. I am looking to go to a true sc in the bridge (maybe a JD, after reading this thread), but I really like the virtual T neck. A bit smoother than a regular Tele neck pup, almost minibucker-like. Which isn't too surprising, since it is actually a humbucker. I find it extremely useful for neck position stuff, much more so than any other Tele neck pup that I've used. But, I should say that I've never been a fan of traditional Tele neck position pups.

I had a Virtual HOT T and it was AMAZING. Very veefy, full, soulful, and repsonsive yet still very tele. The site is dead on when it says it sounds like a P90 if you roll off the tone halfway.
