Favorite Way to Record

At home! I'm trying to cut a nice demo without braking the bank by finding someone local to do it for us...or maybe I should? Just let me know what you guys do to record yourselves, it's price, and your opinions on it. Our last demo was made simply by several dynamic mics and it came out sub-par. Thanks guys!

realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllyy good recording software that you can master the tracks in. thats how we do it at home. past that, quality mic/mics (pending on whether you record all instruments mic'd seperate but at the same time (raw tracks, a preference of ours)) and mixer

mics: shure sm57's for instruments and Beta 58 for vocals
software: cool edit pro 2.0 (out of date but works great, not available anymore as adobe bought the company out)

there are a lot of elements that go into recording. if its for a hobby go for the home recording.. if its something you want to impress people with and get record companies to buy into, studio time beats all IMO

This past weekend we recorded in our "mini" studio. We miked my DSL 50 (feeding a Fender GE412) with a Sennheiser E609 and ran it into a Boss Digital 8 track recorder. I highly recommend that mic, as it picked up the sound coming out of the cab quite nicely. For vocals, we're using a Shure BETA58A with a pop screen. Both of those mics are dynamic mics.

If we ever get around to re-recording drums and vocals, I might be able to post the song.

Actually, Adobe Audition is Cool Edit Pro. Its what I use, along with an older TASCAM Model 3 mixing board, and it works great.

I use either an SM57 (best mic we've ever used[in all my bands]) into a Tascam MKII four track for drums, guitars and bass or record direct out of a Kustom III bass amp or a Kustom Quad 65, which actually sounds pretty good usually... sometimes kinda thin. We did the vocals using the SM57 into Cool Edit 2.0 with the instrument tracks.

In my other band, we use Senhieser mics into a Mackie mixing board into Cool Edit 2.0, cool edit is the best recording software I've ever used.... :-D

It's all about getting a good take and then having the time to work on it. Free and or cheap is good. If you're recording with a band make sure the energy is there, even if there's a little wipe out. Whatever is comfortable. I'd love to have the $$ to do a nice 2 inch tape analog recording and dial it out in a major studio, but with new digital stuff you can get a really good quality recording at a more reasonable price. Amp modeling is pretty convienient for recording too. I'm not a fan of it for live playing but it can work nicely on a recording.

yes, i knew about this but we haven't the resources to update. ive also heard some mixed reviews about adobe audition but i think eventually we'll switch

I'ld be curious as to what negatives anyone said about it. It seems like great software to me, with tremendous versatility.

The only thing negative I can think of is, its controls can be a bit daunting to a first time user, simply because of the complexity of what this software does. It does have a fairly steep learning curve.

Do you all run your mixer straight into the soundcard? or what??

I've seen recording studios with tons of pres and rack gear and a computer for recording, do they feed into the soundcard?? or what??
