Favourite recording software?

Anyone have some recommendations on what recording software is a decent option? Preferably something with a not too steep learning curve so I actually get around to using it.

I used to use ProTools at university but that was ten years ago. Cakewalk Express since then...that was ok...

Any products out there that are the iPod of the recording software genre?

Re: Favourite recording software?

Logic is my choice, Mac only. Ableton Live works well too although it isn't designed to be just a recording software, it is for live performance. Sonar sounds quite good but I didn't like the interface.

Re: Favourite recording software?

I like using ableton live, butttttt it seems more CPU-intensive than other programs.

Re: Favourite recording software?

Logic Pro 8. User friendly interface and comes loaded with a great set of plug-ins, software synths and guitar and bass amp modelers. It's a very competent, self contained system. Plus, you are not tied to a limited choice of audio interfaces, as is the case with ProTools. I would love to use ProTools software, but not if it means I have to use an MBox. I chose a Metric Halo ULN-2 and Logic, and they work together seamlessly.

Re: Favourite recording software?

Pro Tools is still the industry standard.
I use Cool Edit, now Adobe Audition, because I find it's the easiest to use. It has a lot of features too.

Re: Favourite recording software?

I will be a diehard Cubase/Nuendo user until someone else implements a drum-mapping feature as good as Steinberg has.

Re: Favourite recording software?

I'm in the Nuendo/Cubase camp as well.

Does everything Toolz can do but without the $10k+ price tag and without Logics insanely ill-logical interface.

I hear good things about Adobes Audition, never tried it though.

Are you on a mac or PC? If Mac... the Audiodesk that comes with Motu hardware is exactly the same as DP but without the midi or extensive plug-ins...

I've never had anything but disdain for any Cakewalk product, Sonar included. Been doing some overdubs on an artists Sonar rig over the last year and man, is it EVER clunky. At the least they could've implemented the "standard" Windows key commands for cut/paste/copy etc. Importing/exporting and file management is also a HUGE drag. Not very well thought out. This is version 3 I think... dunno if the new ones are better in that regard.

Re: Favourite recording software?

Used Sonar for years but hate the clunky interface. Switched over to Mackie Tracktion and I am very happy now.

Re: Favourite recording software?

I use sonar 6&7 ;audition 3 ;SX3; mainly and have other assorted things.
Audition is easy to use.I find sonar easy as it has good vst support and easy routing! SX3 has isssues;as with many others, not seeing drivers and other things.[routing signals]:kabong:

Re: Favourite recording software?

I've been using Adobe audition for years now, and have just become very used to it for simple recording/multitracking. I've always found it very intuitive. It does decent looping and pitch shifting too . . .

Re: Favourite recording software?

I like CoolEdit. It's something I can understand without delving into a thick manual.

Re: Favourite recording software?

this is where i'm stuck with the new set-up i'm working on. i can't decide on software. i don't know if i should go with cubase SE3 or audition 3. i may just buy a mac mini just for recording and garage band lol...all i need is simple and the multi-take recording seems very useful. does any other software do something like that making multiple takes so simple?

Yeah, that's what I had . . . I got the free upgrade to audition when Adobe bought out CoolEdit.

Logic Pro 8's multi-take and comping facilities are excellent...

And the new interface has removed what was known as the Environment, which was the part of Logic 7 that everyone rightly criticized for being illogical. That's all gone, so Logic is now logical!

Re: Favourite recording software?

i'm using garage band now. came with my mac and its really simple, sounds good, ect. i prefer to use my own effects and junk so plug ins and stuff arent that big of a deal. i will eventually get a E-MU usb interface though. maybe logic pro 8 later because i can get a mad student discount

What was the last version of SONAR that you used? I have 6 and love the interface.

ProTools is the devil. It's a hold-over from the days when computers couldn't handle the processing power needed to do recording on their own - an approach that only makes things more difficult nowadays.

Re: Favourite recording software?

I'm on PC...so Logic is out I guess. Audition might be interesting to check out.

Re: Favourite recording software?

I used Ableton Live 4-5-6 ,Nuendo ,Cubase Sx sreies ,Cubase 2 and 3...Sony Acid Pro.

I am using Cubase SX3 now ,but i want to test the Mackie Traction...I dig Mincer's work ,so maybe it works for me...

But i am GASing badly for a Mac and Logic8...

Just about everything can do "folder" takes... and even if it can't it's no problem to set up groups. Really, all of these programs do "about" the same things.

Comes down to user interface, maybe MIDI programming depth (I'm a MIDIit.) and other features like how many plug-ins you can run at one time or if you want to do advanced looping... simultanous channels of I/O and track counts.

You should pick your software and then pick your OS. The hardware interface is also going to be a key, if not THE key decision since not everything plays well together... and a lot of the interfaces come with at least a stripped down version of something, usually Cubase.

Tracktation... in the little I've messed with it seems solid & easy to use, but might be too limited for some folks.

Anyone remember SoundTools... or Deck?! Circa 1990 here... lol
