Feedback issues

With higher gain tube heads I have been getting a lot of feedback lately, more than welcome. Not sure why. It seems to happen most at medium to higher volumes. The best cure seems to be backing off my guitar volume to about 7.

Is this a common problem or could my Duncan APH1's be going Microphonic on me? would appreciate any advice.

Re: Feedback issues

I just waxed a set of Pickups for a thinline Tele. for the same reason. Higher volume and drive would cause it to screach a little on me. Backing off on the volume helped. I removed the pickups and wax potted them. That helped a lot, but is is still more sensative than my solidbodies. I just cut some foan to stuff into the "F" hole to see if that will help, but in rerality I can live with it. All of this has happened mainly thru my Marshall. I will be testing this guitar and one other thru my Shiva later this week.

If you think the pickups are going microphonic test it first. Set the amp to the point that feedback happens and then speak loudly over the pickups. If you can hear your voice coming theu the amp you need to wax dip the pickups.

Re: Feedback issues

As much as I love my nickel covered Brobucker, it'd squeal if I was standing in front of a loud amp with a lead tone. I did a fast potting job on it, and it's fine now. One thing I noticed about highgain amps is that one quality that separates the cheap ones from the expensive ones is how much hiss and feedback they put out at high volume. Turn a 5150 up loud with highgain and there's a noticeable hum/hiss. Do the same thing with a Bogner or Diezel and it's almost as quiet as a clean amp, even with the gain whacked up.

Re: Feedback issues

hmmmmmmmm Joe, so do you have any cures for this?

I also worry when adding a TS9 to already gainy amp, tends to squeal a bit
aside from a noise gate, are there any cures?

Re: Feedback issues

Call MJ in the custom shop and she'll wax pot it for you for a nominal fee. Assuming it's not wax potted already. Just loosen up one of the pole piece screws and look for some tell-tale signs of wax on the threads.

Why can't we just use pup names? Is this an Alnico II Pro or a Seth Lover? Seth is not potted, A2P is.

Re: Feedback issues

could be the pup like the others said...which amp is this happening on? Some amps only allow for so much distortion and then give horrid feedback because they are being driven differently than how they are wired to produce their sound

amps like the Peavey XXX have a built in noisegate; I would not be suprised if other amps have the same thing

Re: Feedback issues

You could also have a couple of microphonic tubes in your amp. First one to check is the V1 preamp tube. A reverb driver tube that is even slightly microphonic can cause a lot problems in some amps. Finally, even power tubes can be microphonic.

Tube quality once again seems to be on the decline. I've heard a lot of brand new amps lately, from various manufacturers including Fender, Marshall, Mesa, Peavey, Bogner, VHT and Carr--all with what I suspect were bad tubes.

Be it a microphonic tube, or pickup, you're not getting a true tone.

Re: Feedback issues

When my TSL 100 is cranked, I get a high pitched whistle on my lead channel when the gain is cranked, whether my volume is up or down all the way. It never really did this until I got my lil '59's put in, although I may just not have payed close attention with my single coils. Any thoughts?

Again, that really sounds more like a tube issue than a pickup related problem.

Time to do some tube swapping.

Re: Feedback issues

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but turn the gain down and the volume down a little. I was having similar isuues with m Tele. which has a JazzN and a 59B. I waxed um up and it helped some but the feed back was still an issue. I turned the gain down and the vloume down and the problem was gone:)

Re: Feedback issues

now when you say feedback, do you mean the hissy squealy popping sound, or the heavy metal pinch harmonic sound?

if it is hissing, try a different cable.
if it is squealing, try jiggling the tubes when the amp is off and tapping the pups at high volume. check for varying sounds in the coils and you can pinpoint the problem.
for popping...seek professional help imediately.
and if it rings... turn away from the amp and move a few paces until the sounds subside.

if none of that does anything...you should probably follow bill or scott's advice.
