Feedback on sawtooth guitars?

Hey guys, I've got a student looking for a LP like guitar and He's looked at PRS and Rev Stars and Reverends and Gretch are on the short list.

He found the sawtooth company and is looking at their voodoo series..

One of the positives is the Floyd bridge that doesn't require a rout and 25 scale will fit him nicely.

From the videos I've watched, it looks like the pups are voiced for heavy crunch/metal, and he's more of a play anything kind of guy so that's one of my first questions.. are the pickups open and detailed enough to be used for classic blues, rock etc.

I've mainly heard positives about the Floyd, but don't have any experience with it.

The price seems right, I think the one he's looking at is about 750, and I'd appreciate feedback from anybody that's played one of these or knows anything about them.

While I haven't played one, or even seen one in person, I'd also suggest he look around to see what other brands have comparable guitars at that price point so he knows what choices he has. A few things: the guitar on the page you mentioned is more like $1k, and comes with 59s. On the 'buy' link, it goes to many stores that are out of stock or simply to that store's home page, and not an actual product page. Also, I am guessing the model called 'Americana VuDu' is not made in America at those prices.

It says they use SD '59 pickups in the neck and bridge. Those are vintage PAF-style pickups and should work pretty well for just about anything you want to play. No need to worry that they'll be locked into heavy only type stuff (although they'll work for that if you have an amp/distortion pedal voiced for that style.

I haven't used that Floyd FRX bridge before, but if memory serves Securb on this forum has installed one - you might message him for specific questions about it.

For LP shapes in that price range I would be looking at a Schecter Solo or an ESP LTD Eclipse. Both are available at a few price points and can be had with a Floyd if that's a requirement. Both of my Schecters, and the other ones I've played, are well-made solid players.

I do like the Schecters as well , though I do not own one for some reason

oh yea , Im cheap

LTD is a good choice, those are fine instruments

Thanks for the suggestions! Definitely will pass them on.

But no superstrats. All of these are dual humbucker single cutaways or SG styles.

The top mounted Floyd really got his attention. I think he also said that it was a relatively thin guitar, but I don't have a dog in the hunt.

Yeah I suggested shecters and ESPs... I think there may be an ESP in the running.

Thanks again! All great info.

I absolutely loved the FRX. The only reason I removed it was my guitar is a Les Paul "Lite" which has a different neck angle than a typical Les Paul. I could not get the action where I typically like it. If it were silver instead of gold it would be on one of my other Les Pauls right now. It has some features they should put on the traditional FR terms like the ability to block and unblock the term with a thumb screw. The bridge can also be locked. The tension can also be adjusted to your liking. Here is a video of my slapping it around. Watching the video makes me miss having an LP with a modern trem.
