Feels like I just stole something...

Re: Feels like I just stole something...

If it can't stand being stripped and repainted, a few years of playing would do it in, so go for it. You'll have to be really careful if you want to keep the binding intact, though. Don't use a heat gun on it; from what some of the other guys have said you could set the binding up in smoke pretty fast, before the glue would even let go or the rest of the finish would come off.

Re: Feels like I just stole something...

I'd rock it as is. It has the legit vintage mojo.

Yeah, you could do that. I mean, it looks like it has the original strings, so…
In all seriousness, I would probably leave it. I like old stuff with mojo, and that piece definitely has it.

Re: Feels like I just stole something...

Chances are I'm going to take the bridge and tailpiece off of it and put it on a ibanez les paul. I settled on getting an ibanez les paul after I couldnt find a penco. At that point I'd want to give it a sunburst like this (http://www.biorust.com/tutorials/ps-layermasks/7.jpg Only the burst would cover the entire guitar not just the drop shape) and put a chrome tailpiece and bridge on it.

This is the plan thus far, however, I will inspect it to see if it could survive the procedure. I have a sanded down strat and an aria lp copy to practice painting on. As far as pickups go, I have an ibanez lp with a custom 5 and a PGn, and would want something to completement these.

thats sweet! i'd just set it up and use it as is, its vintage mojo afterall....

Re: Feels like I just stole something...

You could sell the case and get a good portion of your money back.

Seller screwed up by calling it an SG instead of a Les Paul. They could have gotten more for it.

Re: Feels like I just stole something...

Looks like the neck pickup has been flipped around and some owner along the way has played it considerably as evidenced by the rust pattern on the neck plate. Might be a real nice lil rawker with a few tweaks.

Unless you are real gung ho on a refin, may I suggest a few good polishings and continued relicing. :friday:

Re: Feels like I just stole something...

yeah i wouldn't refin that guitar. A ton of work just to ruin any vintage coolness it might have.

find a guitar that NEEDS a refin if you wanna do a refin. This thing looks cool and has a STEEL ADJUSTABLE NECK

I would like to hear your suggestions. After hearing you guys advise against refinishing it, I will do nothing of the sort.

BTMN, how would you go about polishing it? What would you use and how would you do it?

As for the case, I'm going to keep it, considering I dont have one and need one for old guitars like these.

Edit: Is it possible to repair the binding on only certain parts of a guitar without rebinding the whole thing? If so, how? I've spent my time working on all the electrical aspects of guitars and just now trying to branch out into working on the finish/wood parts of one.

I wouldn't touch the binding at all and I would just rock out with that thing!

$146 for it, including a hardshell case.

I know how to tell the date on an ibanez guitar based on its serial number, but anyone know about these?

Also, I"m considering stripping it and repainting it. But I am wondering if, since its at least 35 years old, it could withstand such an operation. Any thoughts?

You will so piss me off if you touch that guitar's finish. Just get it cleaned and set up and enjoy that rare jewel!

P.S. I tried stripping an 1935 Gibson Lap Steel that some idiot painted purple. The color bled into the binding. I had to have a professional sand the binding. The binding was paper thin by the time the color came out. LEAVE THE GUITAR as-is. Just polish it up good with some Peavey or Gibson guitar polish. You can use Lemon Pledge too.

flip that neck pup around (actually, now that i think about it, you'll probley end up changing out the stock pups, for something better)

Considering I'm on this forum that's a safe bet. I'm going to give the pu's a fair chance, but I've read bad things about them.

Re: Feels like I just stole something...

Never heard of Penco before. Most of the other features of your guitar remind me of an Avon LP copy I had at aged sixteen. The Avon "humbuckers" did not buck hum. Closer examination revealed only one coil inside each metal cover. That was the beginning of thirty years of meddling with guitar innards.

Re: Feels like I just stole something...

That looks cool. I saw a thread where a guy took apart one of these old archtops and found that the archtop was really a veneer with small blocks of wood underneath creating the "arch" !!!
