Fender american standard pickup question

OK, I picked up a full set of 2000 american standard pickups with wiring for a good price, pots, 5 way switch, everything, ready to install... now I have a few guitar projects one of which is a yamaha eg303 strat copy I put together with no electronics, do you think I should install these pickups in the yamaha which I'm building for a beginner, or are they pretty decent quality pickups I should put in a better quality strat guitar??

Re: Fender american standard pickup question

I liked the pickups that came in my Standard Am Stat....mines a 2000 too, actually. I tried several pickups before I found something I liked better (SSL-1s, though I might swap them for SSL-2s, Fralins, Surfers, etc). Good pups...don't ditch 'em just because they're 'stock'.

i don't know what kind of music you are going to play, but the american strat pickups (alnico 3) are the best fender makes in my opinion. they're pretty versatile. if your guitar has an alder body, they definitely would sound good.

i see a couple of dimarzios there in your picture. if that's a norton and a chopper, that's my favorite combination. such unbelievably good tone from that combo. if you want a good idea, try a norton dp160 bridge, and a chopper for mid/neck.

don't mix them though. the american strat pickups sound too good together. hope this little info helps

Re: Fender american standard pickup question

They are not too bad. I have the neck and middle in a strat with a Dimarzio Virtual hot PAF in the bridge, and I've never felt the need to replace them. You could do a LOT worse.

Re: Fender american standard pickup question

My 1996 American Standard Stratocaster doesn't have staggered pole pieces.

My tone is not very SRV or Mayerish, and I wish it was.

I like my bridge pickup though, which is tough, because that's where a humbucker usually goes... I wish ___________...

Re: Fender american standard pickup question

I had a 2000 fender american for a while. The deltatone pups were clean, to the point of edgy, through a Dlx reverb anyway. I kept the guitar stock and sold it - to many guitars at the time., But if i had kept it I would have kept the deltas, though with a mod to use the mid tone with the bridge pickup.

the deltatones get the cluck & strat clean tone - I like my SD ASlnico IIs better, but that's cause I like a mellower sound. I think HotSEXJ's issue might have been that bright top edge the deltas have. If you like to hear your fingerprint as it slides across the G string, they're great - with some gain the grab everything there is off those strings! (I'm not dissing here, there's guys who get that really edgy thing going & make it work, I can't!)

Re: Fender american standard pickup question

OK, maby I'll save these pickups for a better strat, and find some cheap yamaha strat pickups/wiring off ebay, after all..this guitar I'm building is for a beginner, who wants her first electric guitar and is only 9 years old and seems to be destined to be a great player (can play the entire crazy train on an acoustic sans solo!!, I couldn't play that main riff properly for quite a long time!)

Re: Fender american standard pickup question

Oh, ya, keep the good pickups fer yourself so when the kid smokes you, ya can say "Well, I got better tone!"
