Fender Blues Junior: Converting El84s to 6l6s?

Re: Fender Blues Junior: Converting El84s to 6l6s?

I'm not sure if the size of the cabinet will accomodate the larger tubes and transformers. Maybe one of the amp gurus will chime in with info.

Re: Fender Blues Junior: Converting El84s to 6l6s?

I'll be frank ... it's a bad idea. It would cost too much, and wouldn't be worth it.

Even if you could, I'm not sure you'd like the results. The B Jr is a classic Fender sound, btw -- the sound of a Champ.

However, by judicious use of the right tubes and speaker, you can get quite a range of tones from the B Jr, as is. It's a matter of knowing what that target tone is, then going after it.

When push comes to shove though, I'm just going to take a wild guess that you'd be happier with a Deluxe Reverb, or something with 6L6s.

Yeah, I had a feeling it would be A. Expensive, B. Not worth it, C. Too hard or D. All of the above. There's something just missing from my Blues Junior then...

Bungalo, what's this Tonestack mod?

Bill M's mods really open up a JR and it sounds much fuller.

easy & inexpensive if you have basic soldering skills.......but be very careful ......very high voltages that are dangerous.

D: All of the above. If you want a 6L6 in a small package? Look into the Champ 12. Or the the Closest BF/SF Cousin to the Blues Jr would IMO be a Princeton reverb.

Re: Fender Blues Junior: Converting El84s to 6l6s?

Alternatively to 6L6's, wouldn't 6V6's be a more logical step? Aren't they somewhat similar in tone and response, but in a smaller package and more suitable for lower wattages?

Disclaimer: I'm not at all a tech or anything close, so maybe I'm just talking cr@p here :fingersx:

Re: Fender Blues Junior: Converting El84s to 6l6s?

You'd need to change the sockets, maybe change the heater's current, probably change your output transformer...mhmm what else... redo all the wiring of course. Meh I'm not good enough to tell in details.
But I doubt you'd have enough room on a BJ's chassis for two more octal sockets.

Change the speaker is also a good way to get more of what you like.
A good set of EL34s will go a long way, too.

These are the two things I suggest to people, unless they're willing to break out the soldering iron.

+ 1 on the speaker. Weber ceramic Blue Dog was the best upgrade ever in terms of $/tone

MIA has a typo though - you'd better stick with EL-84 power tubes in the Blues Jr.
