One of the largest resources is the Blues Junior Mafia over on the the FDP Forum.

hey, thanks for replying, Curly :)

very informative link, thank you.

btw, how does this amp compare to the hot rod deville 212 tonewise?

thanks,

Re: Fender Blues Junior?

well, I'm not really familiar with the HRD that well.

Of course, the dynamics are a lot different because of the power difference.

everything I read from HRD players says that the cleans are good, but the OD settings not so great.

The B Jr is probably a warmer sounding amp, although it has a full tone stack, and can actually get a wide variety of tones.

If it's a choice between the two amps, then it depends on what you're using it for.

Re: Fender Blues Junior?

The HRD is much louder, much heavier and is just a completely different amp. It has very nice cleans, but can be a little bright. The OD channel is not great, especially at higher volumes. The reverb is very springy/boingy compared to older fender amps.

I like the tone of the blues jr better-it is warmer with nicer mids. With a speaker change, its tone is hard to beat for the price. It does need to be miced if you are playing a larger room.

Re: Fender Blues Junior?

just using it for bedroom. i finally gave up on the fantasy of having a 60 watt tube amp in my house and rocking it out.

the blues junior should be ok for bedroom levels, right?

Re: Fender Blues Junior?

The BJ is a good bang-for-the-buck amp. Lightweight and portable. With a good speaker, they sound much better. A V30 sounds nice in them. Good tones at bedroom levels, and it sounds really nice dimed (its best tone, IMHO). The reverb doesn't light me up too much, but it's adequate. For the coin, it's a heck of a deal :)

I agree with the tweedster. I replaced the original speaker for a V30 & slapped some matched up JJ tubes & the little bugger just kicks it. Add a SpinaModded TS-9 on top of that and I'm ready to go. Curly/Gary is right, check out all the info on Fender forum about it. People have different views on replacement speakers and tubes, but if you do you research and find similar views with another "Blueser", you're gonna love the results. Great little amp! Good luck!

Peace,

Darrin

Re: Fender Blues Junior?

I dig mine and I use it for a small local jam, practicing at home and jamming with friends. New Weber Blue Dog and JJ's. I've had tons of compliments on it's sound. Only drawback - Not enough clean headroom to complete with a full band. I play blues and don't need clean headroom so it doesn't matter to me but that could cause you to look elsewhere if you need loud cleans. It's a blues machine - that's basically it.

Re: Fender Blues Junior?

I agree with what's already been said. My buddy has one and loves it. They can clean up nicely or get dirty depending on tubes. I slapped in some worn out JJ's in the preamp section and it sounded much much better...so with new ones in the pre, and power and a decent speaker I bet it sounds fantastic. My friend runs his clean and spices his sound through a Behringer V-amp.

Re: Fender Blues Junior?

A Blues Jr. with a ceramic Weber Blue Dog speaker and Mini-Mass Attenuator makes a great practice amp, IMHO.

The stock speaker has a flabby bottom end - you really need to replace it with something. The reverb is a bit lame and the tone controls can be improved (see Blues Jr. Mafia & Bill Machrone, especially), but overall it's a great little amp. Most guys seem to prefer JJ tubes, but I've been using Electro Harmonix tubes and like the slightly brighter tone personally.

Re: Fender Blues Junior?

I played a tweed RI Blues Jr. and I really liked it. It was my favorite in the store (which carried multiple Fenders, Marshalls, Mesas.

It's simplicity at its finest. Great cleans can be had at low volumes and when cranked, it does blues very well. Sometimes I wish I didn't know about other amps so that I could be happy with something simple like that.

Blues Jr Mafia...

About 2-1/2 years ago, various forum members of the Seymour Duncan let this cat out of the bag...
