Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

A shop very close to my house has a Fender Super. They claim it is from 1967, but it is clearly a brown Super, like this one:

... which would make it 1960-63.

It has been modded with a master volume on the back, and a toggle that throws the two channels into series instead of the stock parallel. Both mods were done in the early 70's by a local (fairly famous) tech with the intent of getting more gain. The note on the amp claims that with the master vol. on maximum and the switch in parallel mode, the amp is basically stock. They also say it is pretty easy to revert the amp back to stock if so desired. The speakers are newer (supposedly better) Jensens.

The shop wants CAN$1600 for it. Seems a bit high to me, but I'm not an expert.

I have no experience with brown Fenders. I'm curious if anyone here has ever owned or played a Super from this era, and can give me a quick review.

I think I'll pop by and give it a test drive today.

Thanks.

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

i love brown amps. kinda tweedy, kinda blackface but a tone all their own. im not sure what a good price is, especially since its modded but a brown super is a cool amp for sure!!

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

Tell them 1967 is CBS era, and therefore it's a POS, then offer them half of what they're asking.

Cool amp.

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

Sexy as hell, i would buy it on layaway, but man 1600 canadian? thats nutin.

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

i just read the new jensen speaker part. better? not likely unless they are old (60's) but a different model. the new jensens arent bad but are no where near as good as the older ones. are the new ones even alnico?

i would think that would drop the price for sure.

since its modded and has new speakers there is very little collector value, so this is a players piece now (which is what it should be anyway) id beat him up on the price, those old p10q's are great speakers and worth some bucks!! it might have had the p10r's which are good also (tweed bassman) or some oxfords which arent as good but would still increase the value cause they were stock.

so right now $1600 canadian is about $1360 us which is a damn good price for a stock unit. id do a little more investigating.

just thought of one more thing. which way are the controls laid out:

input jack, input jack, bass, treble, volume

or

input jack, input jack, volume, treble, bass

this will tell ya what circut it is and help tell how old it is

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

What is stamped on the Chassis? Should be able to find the date on the bottom.

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

makes me wonder if it's a 67 that someone has modded into a brown face?

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

The mods done have messed up the resale value a bit. No telling what is on the inside. Was it done by a pro or a hack? I'd pull the chassis and shoot some high rez pics for us.

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

I'm sorry I didn't have time to respond earlier, but everyone's covered the basics.

it's in decent cosmetic shape from what you can see ... well, OK shape ... it looks like there are holes on the top ... as if someone had the wrong handle -- minor point

jeremy's right about the speakers

Scott's right about the chassis ...you need to pull it to see how easily reversed the mods are, and what kind of shape the components are in.

first of all, for them to say it's a '67 means they are nearly clueless, and that could work in your favor or not. I think you need to have a good idea of what a REAL, FAIR, GOING RATE is for one of these ... the problem is that all of the brown face models are rare, so you may have to do a little legwork. The standard "Bluebook" of guitars is Vintage Guitar magazine vintage guide. You need to find a dealer who will tell you what the value is -- and remember that vintage guitar and amp prices are VERY dependent on the shape of the piece.

If I had to pull a value out of my a$$, I would've said $1200. You also have to consider that you will need to have a good amp tech check it out and get it in good operating condition ... you should budget $200 - $300, IMO.

By the way, IIRC, jeremy played the white tele through a brownface amp at the SDUGD jam.

edit:

oops ... I missed the fact that the pic is not of the same amp we're talking about. :(

yup but the amp wasnt mic'd so you cant really hear it on the recording. very cool amp for sure, but who knows how messed up it is.

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

If its a local shop I'd try to haggle with the owner, you might be able to bring that price down considerably. But it looks great I'd probably buy it if I was in your shoes.

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

Guys, the pic in the thread is not the amp itself - it's just a pic I found that looks the same.

I didn't have time to try it out today, but maybe tomorrow. I'll also see if they'll let me take better pics.

Also, I'm really not in a position to buy this thing right now. Heck, I don't even know if I'll like it. If someone else wants me to buy it for them on their behalf, I'd be up for that for sure.

One last thing: the power cord has been upgraded to a three-prong, so I suppose that counts as another mod.

Thanks for the info so far.

Re: Fender brown Super ... what do you think?

This might not be much help, but the last brownface I saw was in Ottawa and they wanted $900.00 for it. I'm almost sure that it was a Princeton. It hadn't been modded.
